This is a tough one... Actually really tough... We got Andre dawson who was more of a power hitter, but only hit 30 HRs or more 3 times in his career vs an OBP machine who was a terrible defender...

I am going Abreu though because of Andre Dawson's pathetic OBP of .323 and career high of .365... Having only 3 seasons of 30 or more HRs doesn't make him a power hitter good enough to overlook this...

Dawson, but it's very close. Abreu was a helluva player from 98-04 (and he was actually good defensively at the time). Abreu's durability was pretty remarkable (13 consecutive seasons with 150+ games; and that ended with a season with 142 games).

REALLY close.

Abreu has a 41.5 WAR7 vs Dawson's 42.5. That's a push.

OPS+ (Abreu / Dawson)
120: 10 / 8
130: 7 / 6
140: 4 / 2
150: 1 / 1

Abreu has a better OPS+ breakdown, but it is very close.

Awards

Dawson: ROY, MVP, 8 ASGs, 7 GG, 4 top 10 MVPs (2 runner-ups, 1 win)
Abreu: 2 ASGs, 1 GG

Dawson is clearly the more decorated player. This is even more telling given that Dawson played in MUCH smaller markets throughout his career.

I have made the decision to ignore OF positional issues in this tourney because, well, just because. However, in a close battle like this, I took a look.

Abreu was just about exclusively a RFer. Dawson split his career between CF and RF. Beyond that, I remember Dawson being a very good to elite fielding OFer. I remember Abreu as being a relative stiff. Both had cannons.

Finally, and this cannot be quantified, my gut says Dawson was better. I was a fan during Dawson's later career (I found baseball in about '87 - Dawson's big year) and throughout Abreus career. Dawson was considered of the studs during the late 80s. I never remember Abreu ever being in discussion as one of the studs.

Dawson in a close one.

Abreu was definitely the better hitter. He's probably going to get next to no love in the voting though. Not entirely sure he should be in the HOF (I'm very torn on Dawson), but I wouldn't complain if he did make it. Regardless, he's a very underrated player and I think he's one of the best players outside Cooperstown.
One of the things I always loved about Abreu was the kinda guy he was at the plate as a older player. He's one of the first guys that comes to mind when coaches/color analysts/TV pundits use that "professional hitter" label on someone. Like, "oh yeah sure he's smart at the plate like Bobby Abreu."
