Very similar to the Piazza/Rodriguez matchup. One of the best defensive 3B ever vs an offensive beast.

Beltre has a decent offensive rep, but he was a wasteland during his Seattle years. Hard to just ignore a 5-season black hole right in the prime of a guys career. But even as he hit like crap, his defense was still elite.

OPS+ (Boggs/Beltre)
120 - 10/6
130 - 8/6
140 - 8/3
150 - 5/1
160 - 2/1
170 - 1/0

Clear win for Boggs offensively. But that was expected.

I think I will go with Boggs in this one. Beltre was clearly better defensively, but 3B is not SS or catcher. I will take the offense.

Boggs is one of those all time greats whose game just seemed incomplete... He was a very good defender, and he was very good at getting on base, but that was all... He had very little power and very little speed... In a ideal lineup, Boggs is very difficult to place... He had too little speed for the #2 and too little power for the #3... But you would still want to bat him in either the 2 or 3 hole... Beltre's career stats puts him more of a 5 hole batter, but he at least had seasons where he would have been a great 3 or 4...

All the comparisons I do are very clear here IMO

Power- Beltre(NOT CLOSE)- Boggs was a doubles hitter, but overall he was average at getting XBHs
BA- Boggs(not close)- Boggs is one of the best average hitters in recent memory, but Beltre did have 5 Great BA seasons too
BB- Boggs(NOT CLOSE)- Beltre was never known to take walks and is well below MLB average, while this was Boggs strength and he was well above MLB average
SO- Boggs(NOT CLOSE)- another strength of Boggs
defense- Beltre(not close)- Boggs was very good defensively, but Beltre was(is) something special.
Post seasons- Beltre(Very close) neither were great, but Beltre was closer to career norms than Boggs was.

I guess I have to go with Boggs, he was good enough defensively, and his OBP/BA was just insane...

I will even say this, if Boggs was even average for his era at getting SB or HRs he would have been the best 3B of all time... and might even be a top 10 player of all time..

Beltre had a 109 OPS+ from 2006-08 with the Mariners. He wasn't a black hole in his entire stint with the Mariners. 05 and 09 were pretty blah though. His season ended early in 2009 when he took a hard ground ball to the crotch.

Went with Boggs, but Beltre could very well end up having the better career. I think Beltre has a few more good years in him.
