Went with Thomas because of the better peak, but it's really close. Thome had some impressive longevity (Thomas did hit pretty well late in his career when healthy, but that wasn't very often) and he was pretty cromulent defensively. Thome also hit into far fewer double plays than Thomas.

Very similar in power, and how often they walk... But Thomas wins this because of his career BA .301 vs .276... That is not close for 2 players that are close at everything else...

Let me play this broken record one more time...

I am only looking at 1B. '97 - '05 for Thome and '90, '92-'97 for Thomas. So this is actually two VERY short-timers.

Thomas' worst OPS+ in his 7 years at 1st was 174. Thome only had one season at that level (197 in '02). Not that he was a slouch, he pretty much lived in the 150 neighborhood. But he simply can not compete with a player of Thomas' caliber.

Some of Thome's best seasons did come as a 3B ('95 and '96).
