Dr J was always a favorite of mine. Imagine what he could do with the basketball in the Jordan Era and beyond lax on palming/traveling for the sake of ratings era.

I am ending at 13 because I think there is a pretty big drop off after that. You can make a case for some who have been mentioned, Stockton, Dr. J, Moses, or others like Pippen, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Patrick Ewing, Isiah Thomas, even Pete Maravich. In a couple years don't be surprised if Kevin Durant is making a claim.

I personally downgrade Wilt and Russel somewhat because of their era, but you can make a case for either as the GOAT. I just don't believe either would have been that dominant in today's game. Very good, yes, utterly dominant, no.

Russell didn't make your top 15 :L

He's not good enough. Close though. My list is not about rings, else Russell would be ahead of the Stilt and we all know how abursd that is. Russell is one of the most overrated athletes of all time.

1.) Russell
2.) Kareem
3.) Jordan
4.) Bird
5.) Magic
6.) Hakeem (underrated)
7.) Shaq
8.) Duncan
9.) Wilt (just not a winner which is why he is below Duncan and Shaq, both winners)
10.) Oscar
11.) Kobe
12.) Dr J
13.) Moses Malone
14.) Lebron
15.) Jerry West

Honorable Mentions: Stockton, Barkley (very underrated. If he had one or two rings he is easily top 15. He had some of the best playoff performances of all time)

Just ridiculous. I guess winning is overrated. Russell wasn't about the stats, he was about winning and knowing roles. Greatest leader, winner, and player in NBA history.

I won't disagree with anything you said, he's a great! He's also vastly overrated and his winning was a product of Red Auerbach's monopoly on talent in that era. There was no real competition. But he's a nice guy with 11 rings so people rank him much higher than he deserves. I'm afraid 10 minutes on the floor with Moses Malone or Timmy would expose Russell as not being as talented and fundamentally sound as he's given credit for. I see you have him as the greatest to ever play which means that you now essentially have zero credibility on the matter.

Wrong. Russell was really good, but I have to somewhat agree with hammer on this one. I think he took it too far by leaving him out of the top 15, but did you see him standing next to LBJ on the podium at the Finals? They are the same height. As great as he was in his era, there is no way he would be the same dominant force in today's game given his size and skill level offensively. Absolutely no way.

My only caveat was that my list wasn't about winning. That being the case, Wilt is where he's supposed to be and Russell is not on the list. I'll never believe that Scottie Pippen or Bill Russell deserve to mentioned among the very greatest. With MJ, Pippen is a decent sixth-man on some teams and without Red. A's basketball genius, we'd hardly know the name of Bill Russell. He was a glorified role player.

Winning is important, but there are too many things outside the player's control that lead to winning rings. Karl Malone never really had a chance with Utah because he always had either Jordan or Hakeem in his way. Does that make him less great? I don't think so, just unfortunate.

Also, if Jordan had played his entire career with the Bullets, he may not have won any rings. Ownership and front office are pretty important.
