I do wonder how much success we'd think Romo had if he had Aikman's teams (2nd ranked D 4 years straight, which included all three Super Bowls).

And the running game.

Romo is a very good QB, but he's no Aikman. Aikman played in an era when the corners could ride the receivers, Safeties could knock them out, and QB's were still fair game. I saw Aikman get knocked out cold against the Cards and get the living shit beat out of him by the Eagles in a 12 sack game. Put Aikman in today's game, with today's rules in place and he'd smash records

Put Aikman in today's game with today's rules in place with today's Dallas Cowboys and he'd be 8-8 imo

Romo is a good QB. Honest.

I don't think that Aikman has the same ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory the way Tony does. That is not saying that Romo is a terible QB, he is underrated and gets all the blame for a mediocre team but Tony is like an automatic transmission. There is no clutch.

I think it is an interesting list. Obviously was trying to be objective. But any list built on stats alone cant tell a whole story. A good/great QB for a bad team will look worse than an avg/below avg QB on a great team. its cool though you tried to come up with a formula that would help try & counter balance the different eras they played in.
I know the greats of yesteryear have worse stats than some not so good QBs now. So I did find it interesting.

My personal thoughts is I think Ken Anderson is one of the most underrated QBs when talking of skills of a QB. No I never say his name as one of the best but he should be considered as up there.

Passing for around 70% back in those days was unheard of. & that's not even considering the weather he played in.

(& I am not a bengals fan) Just thought I would tip my hat to someone that doesn't necessarily get the credit he deserves.

Interesting stuff. I'll bet that took a heck of a long time.

Did you look at any other statistic against the average or just total completions & completion percentage? Did you look at yard per attempt? Passer rating?

I'm surprised Kurt Warner graded 16th. Not like that's bad or anything, but I think he's pretty under-appreciated as a QB.

I see quite a bit of work went into compiling your list

However, any list of QB efficiency that does not include Aaron Rodgers is suspect IMO

Romo is a good QB, top 10 today, but Aikman's a Hall of Famer. He is totally underrated because he didn't care about stats. Bill Walsh said if Aikman were in the west coast system back then, he'd own every record. If Aikman played for today's Cowboys, with the defenses basically playing two below, he'd light it up

In the OP's original paragraph he states that the QB's listed must meet certain criteria. One of the criteria was a minimum experience of 10 years. I don't think Rodgers has 10 years yet. Does he? I'm too lazy to look it up.

As was stated, Rodgers only has 9 years. Since I did this on my own using just a spread sheet and a lot of copy paste, I had to put rules in that wouldn't take me 6 years to complete and didn't water down the pool so much that guys like Russell Wilson wouldn't skew the numbers due to lack of career experience.

As for Rodgers, if I had included him on the list, he would have come in just ahead of Elway. He's exceptional at everything except his clutch stats (of which he is one of the worst).

Yes, the rules changed, which is why I am only comparing Aikman to other QBs who played with the exact same rules. It's his percentages against the average that are compared to Romo.

If Aikman and Romo's career stats are adjusted against the average of 2013 their numbers come out like this:

Aikman 3389-5156 65.7% 37863 203-126 90.4
Romo 2592-3981 65.1% 31545 231-101 98.1

These are obviously regular season only, and as stated before, Romo was better in the regular season (probably because he's had to be), but Aikman just crushes him in the play offs.

I loved Ken Anderson growing up (and not a Bengals fan either) and I was happy that he ended up so high on the list. Sometimes, it seems that people looking back forget that he even played.

As you said, you can't take into account the era in which a man played. Johnny Unitas and men from that period played under a different set of rules that allowed QB's to get hit in the head, WR's to get clotheslined, and there was no 'Mel Blount' rule. Slingin' Sammy Baugh played with a football that was six inches fatter in the middle and wasn't really designed for passing.

What is your definition of "clutch stats"?

it's pretty strange how few qb's meet the qualifications of the sample (every QB who has 10 years of experience and at least 5 years as their team's majority starter with at least 2 years starting from 1966 or later (Super Bowl Era).) but I guess it's just hard to stay in the league that long.

Having Matt Schaub on the list ruins the whole thing for me.

4th quarter comebacks and game winning drives.

I don't suppose there is an adjustment for when a QB orchestrates a scoring drive late in the game only to have his defense give it away
