Hornsby (2B) - 17 seasons (100 games), 127.0 career WAR, 72.9 WAR7, 2 MVP, 2 top 5 MVP

Musial (1B/LF) - 21 seasons (100 games), 128.5 career WAR, 64.5 WAR7, 3 MVP, 5 top 10 MVP, 6 top 5 MVP

Both have too much bold to list here. Hornsby played much of his career before the MVP award was a regular thing and before the all star games so his accolades are a bit sparse. Hornsby played the #5 most demanding defensive position while Musial primarily played the 2 least demanding.

I didn’t understand the last runoff that had 5 guys on it. Musial and Hornsby were far and away the top 2 in the initial round. It should have always been between those 2 here.
In the general, I try to include the top 150% since voters are allowed to vote for 3. I fudge that a bit when it is SUPER lopsided or will advance way too many players, but I TRY to go with a 150% threshold. In the runoffs, I go with a hard 50%

I didn't realize Hornsby played that long. Last time I looked, it seemed less...

I think his higher career OPS (1.010!) is making me consider changing my vote...

Career counting…

Seasons (total/100+) - H 23/15; M 22/21
Games - H 2259; M 3026
Hits - H 2930; M 3630
PA - H 9481; M 12721
2B - H 541; M 725
3B - H 169; M 177
HR - H 301; M 475
Runs - H 1579; M 1949
RBI - H 1584; M 1951
TB - H 4712; M 6134

Musial was slightly more durable, but he also played in the 162 era vs the 154 era for Hornsby (small factor, admittedly).

Hornsby essentially played from ‘16-‘31 and was just a part time bench player (injured?) starting in ‘32.

Musial had his debut in ‘41, but began playing regular starting in ‘42. He missed ‘45 due to the war. He played regularly his entire career, having 100 or more games in every season except his debut season. He retired after the ‘63 season

Hornsby was the brighter comet while Musial was the more consistent star. I like the “peak” players more than I like the “slow and steady” players, but I see the argument for Musial.

I give extra credit to middle infielders, but still going Musial here.

I was hoping someone other than Clayton would explain this to me. Why do you rank him so high.

Is it just the matchup?? Or do you have Musial in your top 10.

I honestly don’t have Musial in my top 15 and maybe even top 20. And don’t see this matchup to even be close. With a big win for Hornsby.

With so many silent voters, it is hard to understand why the votes are going the way they are. This is a battle between 2 Cards, so I dont see there being a homer aspect. Maybe they are just going with the more recognizable name? Hornsby is not a name that gets mentioned a lot on ESPN or by Barstool. There is no video of Hornsby, so there isn’t any emotional link to him.

:noidea:

Nah. There is a homer aspect still. This happens to all fanbases. There are just players everyone loves. Not saying there is not a reason to love them. Just that it creates a weird bias. Even within the fandom.

That’s how I see you giants fans when it comes to mays vs bonds.

And us Yankee fans with Lou Gehrig.
