Freeze frame at :35 then slow mo it for a second or two. It looks to me like the guy actually grabs the side wing then falls off and is run over. Kinda blurry tho.

I believe that Stewarts camp is making this claim as well.

Seeing that Ward was just a kid I wonder if a civil action could attach to further winnings? As much as I know that Tony is a complete hot head I just cant get too he intentionally ran over a fellow driver. I just cant.

Now with that being said I could see that Tony would "buzz" him and did he make a mistake?

The only one who knows that is Tony Stewart. Nothing that any expert here or elsewhere says really matters.

in NASCAR is a term that refers to bumping, spinning out, driving aggresively right?


"Mr. I watch NASCAR all the time" if you did, then you would clearly CLEARLY understand that the phrase I am going to run him over DOES NOT literally mean you will run him over but rather is a term used as i described above.

How many times do you hear a driver say "driver X just ran us over" that DOES NOT mean that the guy literally got ran over. it means driver X wrecked him/drove through him/drove over agressive.

Ya'll should actually attend a race some time and bring a scanner with you so you can hear what's actually being said.

Unlike popular belief, there is no universal language that is used. A lot of crazy shit flies off the tongues of these drivers, but you won't hear "I'm about to run him over" thrown around as a common phrase.

In fact, I've been to 11 Nascar events since I was a little kid and we always brought scanners.

Not one single time have I ever heard anyone say that.

I heard Earnhardt Sr. one time say he was going to "send that mother fucker to the moon." I had no idea what he was talking about. Never forget that. That was neat.

Admittedly I'm a fringe race fan...I've seen at least 2 vantage point videos I still contend that he didn't intend to hit the kid...that said, I talked with several avid race fans (one whose even raced dirt tracks) and they all are on the same page with this...it was a very unfortunate accident...as big of a hot head Stewart is, he would not try to take out another driver.

Civil...a lay jury will have to take into account the kid didn't follow protocol by getting out of the car until the safety crews arrived...that won't absolve Stewart but it will affect the monetary value of whatever the family is awarded.

I doubt it. Yes, he was a 20 year old kid. But he was a 20 year old kid who started racing go-karts when he was 4 years old and who had been racing Sprint Cars for 5 years. That's 16 years of racing experience, 5 of which were in Sprint Car.

He knew better than to get out of the car.
