Two true things I can relate to: First my G'son has a bit of autism but at 3 is brilliant with numbers, and I know a guy that can tell me the score of my CYO championship winning basketball game from when I was in seventh grade in the early 70's and what each player scored - just a sports trivia and numbers guy that is spot on but is hard to communicate with.

Social Security sends me an earned benefits statement about 2 months before my birthday every year.

The beginning date is 1975. I was 13 and a foreman on a sun up to sundown detasseling crew thru mid summer back then. I also had two paper routes, mowed lawns, and scooped snow within a 6 block radius of the house I grew up in. I made good coin for a kid.

They took Social Security, State, and Federal taxes for the detassling and the paper routes. Everything that was paid by check for the mowing and snow removal I had to claim.

I remember my dad sitting me down at the kitchen table and explaining to me why the $300 I was expecting to get paid for the week from Dekalb was only $150. That was bullshit.
Not only did I have to make sure my crew of 40 got 95%+ of the tassles, I had to break up fights on the bus or out in the cornfields. All kinds of bullshit. Fights wiping out a 15 ft radius of the cornfield were daily.

I don't think 13 y/o kids can even work today without violating some kind of labor age law. They can't have real jobs or paper routes I know that.

That shit was awful. $4.15 an hour and it was hotter than hell out there. Woke up at 4:30 in the morning to get on the bus. The only good thing about it was dicking around with my friends when thee crew leader wasn't around.
