What's the point of trading a good young d-man to draft a rookie d-man that won't be able to contribute for at least a couple years so you can free up cap space to trade for a win-now goalie?

If the choice is Juolevi and Tkachuk or Hamilton and Nylander, I'll take Hamilton and Nylander. I realize they're trying to free up cap space for Ben Bishop, but there has to be another way to accomplish that task.
