Yeah it feels SO late...probably because I got up early and spent all day at work.

Work was insane today. The first Sunday of every month is our "Target Free First Sunday" where everyone gets in free and the first 1,500 people get free tickets to our Warriors and Temples temporary exhibit. (W&T is these terra cotta warriors from China, the reliquaries that held Buddha's finger bones, and about 200 total objects that have never before left China.)

So basically, we get a lot of what I'll politely refer to as hoi polloi. We split our 6 hour day into 3 2-hour shifts; I was in the front room of terra cotta for the 10 am - 12 pm shift, and I shit you not, I said "There is no flash photography in this exhibit" or some variation thereof FORTY-SEVEN times between 10 am and 10:40 am.

People piss me off.

Yeah the historical Buddha...apparently a real person...when he died they hacked one of his fingers off and it became a holy object. These Chinese emperors commissioned some very expensive reliquaries (boxes) to keep it in. The smallest one is made of pure white jade and is pretty simple, the one it sits in is made of clear rock crystal and has a blue sapphire and a yellow sapphire glued to either end of the top. The one that sits inside of is hammered gold, and the biggest box of all is iron, and was once swathed in gold-embroidered silk; if you look closely enough you can see gold leaves and things on the lid.

I had no idea his fingers were prized. Crazy.

Just the one finger I think. The tomb was sealed in 400 AD (I think) and only found/reopened 1987. Since they realized what the bone was (naturally, there were tablets explaining what was in there) it's toured Buddhist countries as an object of devotion/reverence. The last time it was in China, in excess of 1,000,000 people showed up.

So the Steel City Harmonizers convention was on Saturday in Pittsburgh, but I was at a PChem party in Tucson, so I couldn't go. My friend, however, did go, and he got to sing with Tim Waurick, the tenor for my favorite quartet.

Jealous...

Anyone dabble in being entertained by Emo Phillips?

He's so strange and creepy, but I still think he's funny.
