Team: Columbus Blue Jackets
GM: Scott "Corky" Howson
Picks by round
1) Ryan Murray - D
2) Oscar Dansk - G
3) Jonas Korpisalo - G
4) Josh Anderson - LW
5) No pick
6) Daniel Zaar - RW
7) Giancarlo Curcuruto - D

Other activity on Draft Day: Got Sergei Bobrovsky for three picks, two this year, one next

Grade: C

Comments:
An okay draft, and grading on the "Howson Curve" the fact that he got anyone with talent and didn't try to trade Rick Nash to the hot dog vendor for a footlong, probably equates to more of a B+.

Hard to fault the pick of Murray, who could have gone first overall. But the organizational need is top six forwards, and you could argue three of those went after Murray (Galenchuk, Grigorenko and Forsberg). Murray is a very Solid D man, and a good character guy. Supposedly is already in NHL game shape. But the organization needs are still there.

Second round is where Howson may have redeemed himself. The pick of Dansk could be brilliant. I've read some who had him neck and neck with Subban, and looking over stats he hasn't had a GAA over 2.3 or a SV% under .920 since Bantam. His big, has a great attitude and is pretty level headed. Lets just hop his ankles (or head) aren't made of cotton candy. The second goalie he picked, Korpisalo is in the same mold. A little more excitable, supposedly but still pretty solid. Both are big guys too. The goalie cupboard needed to be restocked.

The rest, meh. Not expecting a lot out of any of them. Josh Anderson is a moderately big guy who gets more PIMs than points. Zaar seems to be a pretty consistent scorer, but he's small. Curcucuto last year had 16 points and 36PIMs in 63 games and was -14. Well, Jared Boll can't do it all himself.

Bobrovsky - who knows? Potential is there, but will the Jackets get it out of him? They will certainly have a solid D in front of him. That's a wait and see.

Picks by round
1) Scott Laughton - C
2) Anthony Stolarz - G
3) Shayne Gostisbehere - D
4) Fredrik Larsson - D
4) Taylor Leier - LW
6) Reece Willcox - D
7) Valeri Vasiliev - D

Other activity on Draft Day: Traded Bob to CBJ for picks

Grade: B

Comments
Homer got another shutdown center. Even though it was a suprise pick, I think it's a safe pick because the kid is willing to do anything to win. Most people wanted the Flyers to draft Maatta with the pick, but I think they strayed away from him because of his concussion issues.

Drafting a goalie in the 2nd was a must. They needed a very good goaltending prospect. Pretty much the rest of the draft was defense except for Leier, who I know very little about. I know Gostisbehere is pretty much just an offensive defenceman. Apparently Vasiliev fits the mold as a guy who is going to stay in the KHL for good, but if he comes over he could be quite a player.

Team: Senators
GM: Bryan Murray

1) Cody Ceci - D
2) None
3) Chris Dreidger (76th)- G
3) Jarrod Maidens (82nd from NSH) - LW
4) Timothy Boyle - D
5) Robert Baillargeon - C
6) Francois Brassard - G
7) Mikael Wikstrand - D

The Cody Ceci pick is a good one. He'll play in the Sens top 4 at some point and has an outside chance at being a top pairing guy down the road. He scored more points in the CHL than any draft age defenseman. I like both 3rd round picks for different reasons. Dreidger has talent in goal and will get a great developmental boost by being the starter in Calgary this year. Maidens was a 1st rounder who suffered concussion problems and dropped. A high risk/high reward move; that works perfectly for the Sens who have plenty of blue chip forward prospects coming in the next few years. The 4th round pick of Boyle is a head scratcher. He came out of the blue and is the brother of Brian "bitch boy" Boyle. I don't like it but I know nothing about how the kid plays hockey. Baillargeon seems like an undersized, skilled C who will be going the college route and is years away from even turning pro. The 6th round pick of Brassard is a great one. An apparently unflappable goalie who can potentially development slowly for the club as Lehner and Bishop graduate to become every day NHLers. I know nothing about Wikstrand.

Overall grade: B+

Murray didn't sell the farm for Nash or Ryan as I feared he'd do so that's good. There are some solid pieces to add as the Sens continue to build on their re-tooloing of last year but the Sens did nothing extraordinary to get into A territory.

Our D is stocked. I mean, stocked. And there's no better prospect to have as trade bait as a young puck moving type Dman. Well, we have about a dozen. Trades? I like them right now. The true moment of truth comes after July 1st hits. That's when the cap space created will show it's power. This ownership team won't waste that money.

Team: Calgary Flames
GM: Jay "Smooth as Italian Silk" Feaster
Picks by round:

1) Mark Jankowski - C
2) Patrick Sieloff - D
3) Jon Gillies - G
4) Brett Kulak - D
5) Ryan Culkin - D
6) Coda Gordon - LW
7) Matthew Deblouw - C

Grade: Incomplete

Comments: Jay Feaster and John Weisbrod sure have put all their eggs in one basket with this Jankowski kid. I've read some interesting reports about him, but he's at least 3-4 years away from joining the Flames. If TT (Teuro T) from Finland turns out to be a stud, this could really come back to haunt the Flames. Sieloff by all accounts hits like a Mack truck, so that's a plus I guess.

Team NY Islanders
Garth Yes I'll have another Donut Snow
Picks by round:

1.Griffen Reinhart C
2.Ville Pokka B- Because I like his name.
3.Adam Pelech C
4.Loic Leduc F He wasn't even in the draft database.:L
5.Doyle Somberby C Headed to BU
6.Jesse Graham Kid has serious wheels on the blueline. B
7.Jake Bischoff C Headed to the U of Minnesota

Grade has to be incomplete at this point. Although I'm prepared to give Garth an F for one reason alone & that's the fact that every single pick the Islanders made is a DEFENSEMAN.

The Visnovsky trade filled a need, but Garth overpaid. I know most Isles fans seem to love the deal, but Visnovsky is about to turn 36 & will be an UFA at the end of next season.

Team: Canucks #26 overall pick
GM: Gillis

Picks by round
1) Brendan Gaunce - C - most scouting reports had him at about #20. Good value, oozes leadership. Leading scorer on a shitty team
2) Alexandre Mallet - LW - points in Jr went from 19 one year to 81 the next. And is a pest.
3) n/a
4) n/a
5) Ben Hutton - D - from CCHL, a bit off the board. Going to Yale.
6) Wesley Myron - LW - from BCHL, a bit off the board. First BC player Gillis picked in 4 years. Going to Boston U
7) Matthew Beattie - LW - kicking ass in US High School hockey. Going to U of Maine.

Other activity on Draft Day: still have Luongo and Schneider. no big whoop.

Grade: C+ . the last four picks had already been through the draft once before. Not sure what that says about them. Still avoids the WHL like the plague for some reason. Looks like Gillis basically picked guys who are heading to college - seems to prolong their development before they come into the organization.

Comments: pretty tough to make an impact picking 26th. The summer will be defined by what comes back for Luongo, and if Raymond is moved, and maybe Ballard. And if we get Schultz.

Meh. Brown was a 6th round pick; I'd say that's a good place to gamble on a 17 year old with some offensive potential playing on a crappy team. If nothing else, it will be an easy transition from a crappy junior team to a crappy NHL team.

yeah I was just teasing - it was a number that jumped out.

I think Burke went a bit over the top (as usual) with the "I woulda picked Reilly #1 overall" stuff
but you guys did well for Schenn.
