This may explain some of it:

Tom Oates: Greg Gard's adjustments paying off on offensive end

Tom Oates: Greg Gard's adjustments paying off on offensive end

UW’s turnaround has to do with improved chemistry and a return to the program’s core values, but it also is reflective of a strategic decision by Gard two weeks ago. Faced with a lack of consistent 3-point shooting, Gard eschewed the 3-ball and instructed his players to attack the rim. The result has been a barrage of free throws and UW’s most consistent offensive stretch of the season, not to mention victories over two upper-division Big Ten teams plus a road win at Penn State.

Led by Nigel Hayes and Ethan Happ, the Badgers pounded the ball inside unmercifully against Indiana. Hayes was 17-for-22 from the free throw line and scored 31 points. Happ was 5-for-7 from the foul line and scored 25 points. At times, UW’s only offensive instructions were to get the ball to one of those two inside.

“It was either Nigel or Ethan and we had a couple different things we went to,” Gard said. “A couple of the timeouts, it was just get Nigel the ball and get out of the way. ... To be able to touch him as much as we did and get to the free throw line that many times, obviously that’s the experience of him. And he’s getting better. He’s starting to embrace contact. Ethan is as well. They’re starting to understand how to finish at the rim.”

As a team, UW was 28-for-37 at the free throw line. Indiana had three big men foul out and shot only 18 free throws, a figure that didn’t sit well with Crean.

“The 19-free throw differential is a head-scratcher for me,” he said.

Still, there is a pattern forming here. In addition to the 37 against Indiana, the Badgers attempted 36 free throws against Michigan State and 35 against Penn State. In their first 18 games, they averaged only 20.1 free throw attempts.

UW clearly has forced the issue on offense the past three games because three different refereeing crews called the game the same way. Also, the Badgers have taken only 12 3-point shots per game during the stretch, six fewer than they averaged in the previous 18 games.

“I think they really are making a concerted effort to go inside a lot,” Crean said. “But the thing that has made them (go) is Hayes is such a good passer. He can really pass out of that block. ... They’re definitely committed to that post-up and they’re definitely committed to the isolation and things of that nature to win the game at the foul line.”

I've got Maryland. Iowa's gonna lose eventually in B1G play, seems like this is the most likely

Typical Iowa style would be to beat Maryland by 18 then lose at home to NW on Sunday lol

Haha yea that's true. It almost feels like they are building you up just to do something like be the first 1 seed ever to lose in the first round. Just based on your typical "tone" when discussing Iowa basketball the last few years!

No one would be less surprised than me if that happened. The God's honest truth is the big problem with Iowa is they lose about every close game they play. We haven't really fixed that this year, we've just been blowing everyone out do we don't have to worry about it but I think Iowa is 3-3 this year I'm games decided by single go digits and 1-3 in games decided by 5 or less.

More of a function of how the game was being called than anything. Drop your head and drive and the refs were sending you to the line.

Yes. About to be on 3 years running of ineptitude. So I'm basically an expert on what's needed to survive an awful season.

The ending of the Ohio State vs Illinois game was similar to the ending of the Eastern Michigan vs Ball State game, if anyone saw that. Refs got suspended in that game. How officials can miss 3 fouls in a row (the first a head on collision and the other 2 intentional wrap ups) is beyond comprehendible.
