Well JJM,

I really didn't want to say it the other day when you were going off on effort that our Football team puts in vs. what the Round ball team does (after our Texas win), but I guess I will say... does the results of the KSU game change your perspective on what is perceived as effort?

I think the effort by the football team was always there (Excluding Bowl Game  ), but effort can be a little miss-leading.

On our football teams effort, if the effort being done is countered by another’s effort, then you can work against yourself. Which I think was kind of the case.

Two people pushing a car from the back, and two pushing from the front = less than ideal results. Yep, you may move it one way or the other, but unless they work together, the effort looks to be little if any?

I know you were all jacked up and hopeful for our round ball team after the Texas win, as were many of us, but I was a little miffed by your analogy of the effort comparisons...

Anyway, I hope you are healing from our dismal performance against KSU and things do not look as bright as they did a day or so ago for them but we still have some season left.... and a lot of things can happen...

Go Big Red!

Afternoon Big Red Said.
I agree with your thoughts. And forgive me if I overstep my bounds, but I was afraid you guys might have a letdown after such an enormous and emotional win over Texas. Plus, despite their struggles, K-State still has a ton of talent. Nothing to be ashamed of. You guys have made such a huge turnaround this year and are certainly on the upswing. Be proud Huskers!

No, the result did not change anything. Actually it just confirmed it even more.

We played right with KState last night, a team that is WAYYYYY more talented than we are, and we just didn't make the free throws in the end. We gave 110% effort once again and left it all on the court last night.

Those games we lost in football this season, we WERE the more talented team..........we just didn't give the effort needed to win. See entire Texas game........see second half of OU game...........see entire Washington game.

I think Bo said it best at the end of the season.........."The 'want-to' wasn't there at times this year for us. We'll fix that next year."

Bottom line is this.........I am not going to pat the football team on the back and tell them it's ok...........they had everything they needed this year to achieve whatever they wanted, and they underachieved in so many ways. And no, it's not all because of Shawn Watson. Bo was right, the want-to was just not there anymore after we lost a couple games.

If we settle for 75% effort, we'll never be the team that we were in the early to mid 90s.

Don't worry guys. UGA undeservedly won the automatic bid in 08 after a miracle SEC tourney run. Maybe you guys can do the same. Then again UGA sucked ass and had a losing record that yr even after winning the tourney:L:L
Don't lose hope yet because you can always win the big 12. Just hope KU & UT get knocked out early and it should be a lot easier.

Looking at our contributors on the basketball team........

Lance Jeter - Junior College Transfer, nobody wanted him.
Brandon Richardson - Turned down Cal State Fullerton and CS Northridge to come play at Nebraska......he was once the ballboy for the LA Clippers
Andre Almeida - Nobody wanted him. Nebraska was the only school to look at him.
Jorge Brian Diaz - Nobody wanted him. Nebraska was the only school to look at him.
Drake Beranek - Walk-on Senior. Nobody wanted him.
Brandon Ubel - Turned down Drake, Illinois State......Nebraska only school from power conference to offer him.
Caleb Walker - Junior College Transfer, nobody wanted him.
Toney McCray - Saved our gem for last. He turned down Baylor. Only player to have another power conference school offer him besides Nebraska. McCray was a 3-star according to Rivals.

And that is why Doc gets such high praise for the work that he does. Because he has to go all over the world (literally) to get all the pieces he wants for his squad..........and they amount to a good Juco squad talent-wise when it's all said and done. But effort-wise, they are one of the top teams in the country.

This is how I feel for all sports, I'll take an undertalented team that gives max effort all the time over a better talented team that doesn't give it max effort all the time. Sure, my team would lose some close games and even win some over these better talented teams, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't lose games I should win.

I honestly believe the walk on program at Nebraska back in the day is what made the football team as good as they were. YOu had kids that gave max effort all the time cause they knew they had to work their butts off to make/be on the team. I think this attitude carried over to the more talented palyers whcih made the team the dominant teams they were. I know there is more to it than just effort, but I believe effort goes a long way in how a team performs.

Exactly, aqwk.........you nailed it on the head.

Now look at KState's starters from last night.....

Curtis Kelly - 5 star....originally committed to UCONN, turned down North Carolina, Pitt, St. Johns, Syracuse, Texas, and Villanova. Transferred to KState in 2008.
Jamar Samuels - 3 star....turned down George Mason, Georgetown, Seton Hall, Tennessee.
Jacob Pullen - 3 star....turned down Dayton, Iowa State, Marquette, Miami, Notre Dame, Purdue, Xavier....not to mention he was preseason NCAA player of the year for 2010-2011.
Shane Southwell - 3 star....turned down Marquette, Providence, South Carolina, St. Johns, Xavier.
Rodney McGruder - 4 star....turned down Clemson, George Mason, Miami, Pitt, Wake Forest.

It seriously seems like a miracle that we are even hanging around against teams like this...........especially given the fact that KState gave 110% effort last night as well. I mean they really got after it. In the end, we went 3-9 from the free-throw line in the last 4 minutes of the game.........and you just can't do that.

so... Doc sucks weiners at recruiting?

LOL........hardly.

Nebraska has been dead last in the conference in recruiting every year since the year the Big 12 was formed.

We do not have the facilities here to attract highly touted recruits. In fact, Toney McCray was a huge surprise for us.........when he chose us he said he just wanted to come to a place like Nebraska to help rebuild.
