Why isn't the water flowing fast enough down river? I just don't understand why they are expecting it to stay until late summer.

I don't know anything about flooding. Flash floods happen here sometimes, but it's hilly here & hardly anyone lives on the banks of the rivers.

Because this is a man made flood. Not a natural flood.

There is 6 dams/resevoirs on the Missouri river between the missisippi and montana, all of them are upstream from here. All of them were kept pretty much full all winter for a couple reasons. 1. Fear of ice jams, 2. building sand bars for some fucking bird. 3. Tourism 4. Whatever dam excuse they can think of.

This along with record snowfalls in the rocky mountains, and way above normal spring rains in montana and the dakotas means that there is a shit load of water upstream that has to be let out of the dams. Gavins point is the closest dam, the previous record for releases was 70,000 cfs which was let out for a few days then back to the normal 40,000 cfs. A couple weeks ago they hit 70,000 and said they were going to have to gradually increase it to 150,000 cfs. This is what gave us the time to build levees and sandbag homes otherwise there would be a much larger impact.

The flow is now at 150,000 and will be likely untill late august. The river has dropped a lil because of it filling up farm ground and it's flowing so fast that it's actually cutting it's channel deeper. This is causing problems in st louis where the missouri dumps into the mississippi because that is where a lot of the silt from here is ending up, from my understanding they are constantly dredging that junction.

It's gonna be a long summer from south dakota to the gulf of mehico.
