McDowell in 2014 was very similar to Jalen Reeves-Maybin in 2013. Both signed with Tennessee as big safeties and were quickly converted to undersized,
fast outside linebackers. Both were demons on special teams in games while learning the ropes on defense in practice. The biggest differences were the
jersey numbers and the dreadlocks flowing out the back of Reeves-Maybin’s helmet.
Players excelling on special teams isn’t always an indicator that they’ll be excellent defensive players, but more often than not that seems to the case. When
a young player flies down the field and almost always ends up near the ball on special teams, it usually means he’s a good athlete with good football instincts
and a good motor. That’s the foundation on which most good defenders are built.
