Meh, pull up the non call on the roughing the Cowboys punter or the phantom offensive PI call on Terrance Williams. I'm sure if we watch the game we'll see plenty of Cowboys defenders getting held at the line of scrimmage. Again, 10 yard punt, not going for it on 4th and 1, inability to capitalize on turnovers etc. etc. It was a shitty situation but it really didn't decide the game.

There's no question though that the importance of penalty calls/non-calls grows the later in the game you get because that gives you less time to respond.

It's the same reason that - right or wrong - there tend to be fewer penalties in the 3rd or OT of playoff games than in the 1st. A poor call against you in the 1st period, 2nd quarter, etc., is a lot easier to overcome than a poor call with 2 minutes left in the game because you've got that much more time to respond.

And for what it's worth, there's only 2 calls so far that the NFL has specifically said that the refs missed. Both went against Detroit.

The Bills can have Frank Reich if they want him. With McCoy & Rivers an OC really doesn't seem necessary. Better receivers & another RB are what's needed in S.D..

The Bills either have or will interview somewhere in the range of 12-15 different candidates according to news reports, so there's no guarantee they choose Reich.

That said, offense is clearly the issue right now, so bringing in an offense minded coach - especially one who can specifically work with QBs (we have a slight problem at that position) is an appealing prospect.

Whoever the new coach for the Bills is, is going to be in a real tough spot. No first and no QB, I guess the best thing to do would be to try and bulk up the o-line and maybe add a weapon or 2 for EJ or whatever QB they go with. The D should be solid, maybe some slight tweaking. The good thing is they can't be worse than the Jets will be.

When Orton retired I knew Marrone wouldn't be back with the out clause in his contract. I don't believe Manuel is the answer. It's unfortunate because the Bills have plenty of talent on D & weapons on O. They just don't have a QB. That means things could be tough for the Bills next season.

Oh & I think the Cowboys were given that game on Sunday.

They already went big on the O line last year. Literally. They used 3 of their 7 picks to take big O linemen in the 2nd (6'7" 322), 5th (6'5" 329), and 7th (6'7" 331).

And the 2nd (Kouandjio - spelling?) appears to have been a miss, because he only managed to get into one game (not sure how many plays) all season, losing out to the 7th rounder (Henderson) who started all 16 games.

The O line was terrible most of the season, but considering they have no 1st rounder and no QB this year, they're not likely to get much chance to improve it.

I don't blame Marrone one bit, honestly. He had a chance to get $4M not to coach the Bills. I wouldn't mind having that gig.

I'm also not sorry to see him go. I don't blame him for everything because he can only do so much with the players he's given, but he seemed completely spineless a lot.

I can't even count the number of times he punted late in games from inside opponent territory on 4th and 1 or 2. Or 4th and 6 down 10 in the 4th from the opponents 47. Or 4th and 2 with 6 minutes left and down 14 (doesn't matter where you are on the field).

He had a D that was statistically one of the best in the NFL but he still wanted to play the field position game rather than taking a chance and relying on his D to get him a big stop at a key time.

It really did. Only our mutual worship of the Great God of Pizza prevents me from pursuing this matter any further.

Obviously for some reason Marrone didn't believe in the kicker. The question I have is how attractive is the Bills job? Sure there's plenty of talent, but no QB & no 1st round pick. I know this might sound ridiculous, but I think the Bills should attempt to do the Bears a favor & acquire Cutler. He shouldn't cost that much because of his contract & the fact he seems to have worn out his welcome in the Windy City.

Sammy Watkins will likely develop into a fine player but I still find it baffling that the Bills traded up. In hindsight seeing how the other rookie WRs panned out it looks even worse. Just a bad move for a team that wasn't quite there. That's the type of move you make when all you need is an impact player to get over the hump.

I'd probably take Mike Reilly and Darian Durant over Cutler as well. Don't know if Lulay can recover from that bum shoulder (I hope he can).

WRs are sooooo easy to find, comparatively speaking. How many receivers in the league are absolute game changers on their own accord? Maybe one, in Megatron? And that's a solid MAYBE. Larry Fitzgerald is the prime example here. He's one of the most purely talented receivers in the league, and his talent has been mostly wasted in Arizona. Meanwhile, teams with high end QBs don't really NEED elite receivers, because even competent ones who can run a route will be successful with a good QB. As a Steelers fan, this is my perspective: Mike Wallace was an unknown, made some noise as a rookie, then Ben turned him into a deep threat. That made him expensive, Steelers let him go, and are able to find suitable replacements pretty easily, and not in the first round. There is always a ton of WR talent in the draft, you just need to look a bit harder sometimes. I'm pretty dang happy with Martavis Bryant, Sammy Watkins running mate at Clemson. Again: you need a QB to rationalize taking a WR that high. So basically, IMO, the first round is for high impact players, and I just don't think WR affect the game enough to warrant that.
