Oh noes!! Two years without a medal at the IIHF World Hockey Tourney. Bob Nicholson is sounding alarm bells.

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia - The president of Hockey Canada says two years without a medal at the IIHF World Hockey Championship is "totally unacceptable."

Bob Nicholson believes his organization needs to start looking at ways to avoid a similar fate next year.

Canada was knocked out of the tournament in the quarter-finals for the second straight year with a 2-1 loss to Russia on Thursday.

Nicholson thinks GM Dave Nonis assembled a good enough team to win here, but faulted a few young players for declining invitations to the tournament for reasons that were a "little lame."

He refused to name names — "those players know who they are" — but indicated they could have made the difference between winning and losing.

With the quarter-final exit, Canada will fall to at least third in the world rankings.

I kind of imagined a Canadian hockey summit would go like this...

"Ok boys, any idea what makes us so goddamn good?"

"Uhh, well our dominance helps"

"Right, right... what else?"

"Well, we have the most players, the biggest talent pool, the most skill.."

"Cool. Meeting adjurned"

i think before they adjourned the meeting theyd talk about some form of discipline for Matt Duchene hanging out 24/7 at the Smelly Cat bar while in Slovakia

that ... or ask him for directions

they had 13 of the 15 youngest players in the tournament.
for the roster they brought, I thought they did pretty well.

Duchene did not have a good tournament - I hope the kid doesn't have an attitude problem (too much success too soon methinks leads to a swelled head).

unless he gets traded away from Colorado, fuck 'im.
he could be the next Tyler Arnason, and take the rest of the team with him.

/except when representing canada, of course :)

I may get railed for this from my Canadian friends but the rest of the world is closing the gap when it comes to talent. Just look at the percentage of Canadian players in the league and 25 years ago.

Europe is producing some very good talent and the hockey programs in the US have gotten much better.

Long gone are the days when Canada goes to a tourney laces up the skates and is guaranteed a medal.

no thats true boss ... Norway, Germany and the Swiss have really impressed me in the past few tournaments

however, for a tournament like the worlds, alot of north american guys are treating it like a vacation ... if they dont win they leave with the solace that they got to chase some prime slovak tail ... except for eberle
