Marty Lurie just pointed out that Lincecum's latest collapse coincides EXACTLY with Hector going down.

For whatever reason Tim needs a certain trust with a certain catcher. He struggled a but when Molina left too. They also don't want Buster catching him because Tim is hard on catchers, lots of balls in the dirt, etc.

But it's exact: he was doing great, pitched the no-no, etc. We called him Tim 3.0. Then Hector goes out, he turns back into crappy Tim.

Good point. I think Buster should suck it up and catch Tim for the rest of this season. I like Susac but I don't see the chemistry in that battery right now. Susac should catch Vogey who would be a better fit for Susac right now. I know Lincecum can throw some scuds up there but it's crunch time and it's time to win it all.

If Timmeh is so fragile that he can't have one of the biggest stars in the game catch him, or if the better catching prospects in the game catch him, than he is not an elite pitcher.

Not that this tid-bit is the straw for that camel. I think that camel has been in traction for a while now.

Well sure, but he ain't ever gonna be elite anymore, no matter who catches him. We just want him to be a reliable #3 type and with Hector he could be that. Agreed that the mental fragility with him is a bit annoying. At least he's not Mark Fidrych.

Also, it's not just Tim doesn't want Buster, the teamdoesnt want him catching Tim due to Tim's style

On 7/25 Timmy's ERA was 3.65 heading into a home game vs. doyers. 4.1 IP, 9 H, 6 ER later he was at 3.96. His catcher that day: Hector Sanchez.

7/30 he pitched a home game vs. the Pirates. 3.1 IP, 5 H, 5 ER later his ERA was 4.21. The catcher was Andrew Susac.

8/5 he threw to Susac again. 6 IP, 7 H, 3 ER. ERA 4.20

8/10 @ KC 3.1, 7, 6. Catcher Susac, 4.51

8/17 PHI 5, 7, 2. Catcher Susac 4.48

8/23 @ WAS 2.2, 6, 4. Catcher Susac 4.64

His suck transcends who is catching him. He's broken and will be an $18MM albatross next year as a bullpen long man.

It's unfortunate but true: He's done as a starter.

Timmy's days as a 3 are loooooooong gone. He wasn't being a reliable 5 right now and was replaced by Petit. Has nothing to do with Hector being his C, Lincecum just isn't a reliable starter

That 7-25 game was the one Hector got hurt. Tim collapsed right after he went out. His ERA was solid with Hector. Hector out, ERA skyrockets. You are corroborating Lurie's point.

He wasn't broken until Susac started catching him.

Now, I don't think it's a lock that you just put Hector back there and Tim is solid again...but it's a non-zero chance. That said, I don't know if you can hold Susac back just to have Hector in there as Tim's personal catcher. Or maybe you carry 3 catchers and Posey sees some 3B and 1B next year. Just sayin', it is a thing and it might be possible to play it that way.

Just now no he was obviously useless...but he looked like a 3 midyear with Hector catching him. It might be a coincidence but the fact remains his ERA was at 3.65 until Hector went down. Plus a dominant no hitter.

You always post with such unshakeable confidence. It's admirable. Not always correct of course, but you are always very sure of yourself.

I'd put the chance of Timmy being able to be a reliable middle of the rotation starter (probably needs Hector to do it) at maybe 30-40%. I know you are at 0%.

Let's say you're 40% and I'm 0%...split the diff and it's 20%

Do you spend $18MM on a 20% chance of him being a #3?

Better yet, do you hold one of the young arms down, not re-sign PeaveMe or Tron, to do so?

I wouldn't even pay a serviceable No.3 18M per

Great question...but you don't need me to tell you the money is already spent.

Your second question is even better, and I really don't know what they should do. They will surely be looking at all of that when they decide. I am barely leaning towards them keeping Peavy and trying Tim in the 5th slot, but do they keep Hector around for that?

Really difficult... :noidea:

Do you burn a roster spot in order to have a 50% #3?

Exactly...or do you burn one on a long reliever getting 18 mil?

Like I said, very difficult spot for Sabes

Going the long-reliever route only burns one spot. Going the starter route burns 2 spots. Pretty easy decision, IMO.

Good point. But then of course, does Tim want the role? It's a waste of a spot especially if he's moping through the season.

Very tricky business. Will be interesting to see what Sabes does.

I would love to be the CIO of my company. Should they give me the job, just to keep me happy, or should they put me in a position more suited to my skills and experience?

I couldn't really give a shit what Timmeh "wants. He has 18M reasons to keep his trap shut.

I'm not following the "burns two spots" in the rotation vs. "burning one spot" in the bullpen.

I guess I'm having a dense morning.

Must be the after effects of the Niners flushing the season down the toilet before it even begins. (Bowman, Smith, and now McDonald all missing the first half of the season).

We would not carry 3 catchers except to have a personal catcher for Timmeh. Therefore the choices are...

1) Have Timmeh in the pen as a mop-up and carry 2 catchers (Posey and Susac)

Or

2) Have Timmeh in the rotation, carrying 3 catchers.

Of course, this assumes Susac is on the team, regardless, which is a large assumption. I think he has shown that he belongs.
