MLB Network's Jon Heyman reports that Justin Upton is "close to a deal" with the Tigers.

There had been some speculation that Upton might have to settle for a one-year contract and then try free agency again next winter, but FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal says he'll be getting a six-year, $132.75 deal that includes an opt-out after the second year. It's a reasonable commitment for the Tigers, especially considering Upton is just 28. He'll take over as Detroit's left fielder.

opt out after 2 years means that Upton will probably only play under this contract for 2 years.

You are assuming he has two good years. If he keeps hitting .250 and playing lousy defense he won't be looking at a pay raise in 2 years.

I was going to acknowledge that, but I thought it would be construed as bragging, so I let it sit instead...

But you are absolutely right. A LOT easier for me to be OK with missing the post season than it is for an Indians fan, for example, to miss the playoffs.
