Tigers AA Catcher Dies in Freak Skateboard Accident

27 years old. He was just riding his skateboard home when it hit something in the road and sent him flying forward.

The circumstances of Numata’s accident suggest he was riding his skateboard home in the downtown Erie area shortly after 2 a.m. the morning of Aug. 30, police said.

Surveillance video from an insurance business nearby showed Numata riding alone down East 4th Street when his skateboard suddenly stopped, as if it hit a rock, and he fell forward, Erie police Sgt. David Stucke said on Monday.

“It appears he just fell on the skateboard and landed headfirst on the ground,” Stucke said. “It appears he was unconscious as soon as he fell. He was knocked out.”

A motorist saw Numata in the middle of the road, pulled over and called 911 about 2:15 a.m. Police found him on the ground, bleeding from the head, Stucke said.

Bars do close at 2 AM, generally. Certainly possible he went out drinking Thursday night and rode his skateboard. Thinking it was safer than driving.

Erie is one of the best party towns in the Great Lakes region.

Lots of bars right near where he was, even more private "clubs".

If he was on a downhill type of board (which you would use if you were someone that liked to board to get around) those things can fuckin book it. Get some momentum behind you and you can fly. I highly doubt he was on a trick board that you would see in a skate park.

Yeah you have to think he was with his reaction time being so bad he couldn't even put a hand out...fell flat on his face the wrong way I guess. That's horrible.

From what I've read and seen lately he seemed like a person who really loved life.
