Iron Duke
Heard this rumor about a week ago.
SU could use another pg transfer from Duke.
Now that SU is in the ACC, if Thornton wanted to play for the Orange, he'd have to sit out two years, instead of just one.
There is only one place that he should go.
And that place is Nebraska.
I believe his Dad wants him closer to his home in California. At least that's the word.
Unhappy with his role of being handed the keys to the Duke offense from Day 1?
Good riddance...
Yeah, there is an ACC rule that inter-conference transfers have to sit out two years.
I don't really mind it, tbh. However, it also extends to players who sign LOI's, without ever enrolling into the school. I just find that portion of it to be ridiculous (what if a coach is fired or leaves?)
I commented on the ACC rule, not the general transfer rule. I think most people agree that if there is a coaching change, then the kid should be able to re-evaluate his basketball future, without penalty.
I do think the ACC rule should be modified if there is a coaching change, or a sickness in the family
I'm fine with the rule, with regards to everything else. There is a lot of whiny teenagers out there who would abuse the transfer rule, if you don't put restrictions on them.
So many teams nowadays don't really play with a true PG. A team like Duke runs PG by committee so I don't know that he was ever really a true PG. Part of being a PG is distributing the ball and getting it to the scorers and that just wasn't happening enough. Some of that you can say was because he was supposed to be a senior in high school, youth, etc. He had his difficulties at times protecting the ball and made some lazy passes for opposition run outs all season. Here are the assist/to ratios for Duke's ball handlers.
Derryck Thornton 2016
16.7% assist rate
17.8% turnover rate
1.6 assist/turnover ratio
Grayson Allen 2016
19.4% assist rate
10.2% turnover rate
1.8 assist/turnover ratio
Matt Jones 2016
12.5% assist rate
10.6% turnover rate
2.0 assist/turnover ratio
Luke Kennard 2016
10.8% assist rate
6.8% turnover rate
2.0 assist/turnover ratio
I guess the kid wanted somewhere he could average 6 assists a game and be the focus, like Kris Dunn and Providence.
Duke has a good track record of churning out PGs for the NBA though.
It's pretty obvious the NBA is a greater priority than winning for him though as Duke is stacked.
That's fine for me. Why do we pretend in the era of 1 and done that getting a title is more important.
I'd wager most kids would rather go 1-1 or top 5 than win an NCAA title.
