I think the Big 10 is gambling that adding Rutgers and Maryland will make more people in those two areas care about those teams

it might work

I don't think it's a gamble. Maryland fans from DC to Baltimore care about basketball. BTN will carry all their basketball games not carried by the major networks. ie..BTN will be bundled into the cable packages of the #4 tv market in the country.

Considering the success Rutgers is having now (5-0)(9-1), local appeal should increase significantly with the exposure they'll get from playing B1G 10 teams. I expect BTN to get bundled into their cable tv packages there as well. They are in the #1 tv market in the country.

Do people in NYC watch college football?

That's actually a good question. I lived there in the 1950's. Ivy League FB, Notre Dame, Army and Navy were popular. Today, with all the pro teams in the NY area, I wonder. Even high school sports has a hard time just making the papers in NYC.

Last time I checked, Maryland and New Jersey have a lot of football talent. I can think of a certain running back that you might have heard of from New Jersey. It's not a good enough reason to bring them into the conference, but there's worse things than allowing NJ and MD recruits a chance to see us every year.

That's true. However NY dosen't and HS football is not that big. Most of the Maryland and Virginia HS stars go elsewhere.

You don't have to wonder. I've lived in Manhattan since 2004. The answer is no, they don't, unless they're transplants from the Midwest or South.

Separately, can Rutgers just change their name to the University of New Jersey (UNJ)? Maybe I would hate them less if they didn't have that stupid name.

I have to admit, if our schedule is going to be....

Rutgers, Maryland, Penn State, Ohio State, Indiana, Purdue, Illinois, Minnesota

I definitely want 10 conference games. Rotate 2 additional teams from the other side of the conference every two years, and this conference might still feel like home. Go 16 and take Iowa away from us permanently and I will straight up have a heart attack.

I don't like that we're never gonna play Iowa, Nebraska or the Michigan schools.
