Guess PG's don't matter as much as we like to think they do?

It's mostly because lot of starting PGs are young. There was a huge influx of PG talent into the league starting '08-'09.

I think a good PG in college is important. In the NBA, its more about talent than just position players.

Well no shit Sherlock. I'm just posting this because everyone always tends to say "the PG is the most important position in the game"

Also, with how deep the PG's are in this league as a position this is especially surprising.

Very true, lots of young talented PG's have entered the league in the last 5-6 years. It's crazy.

Well, how many teams have won a championship in the last 10 years?
Only 5.
Spurs
Heat
Celtics
Heat
Lakers
Mavericks
The Spurs and Celtics PG is on the list.
The Lakers and Mavericks PG have retired playing and are now coaching.
The Heat PG, in name only, had started over 1/2 their games this year, but the Heat just traded for an upgrade. The real PG of those championship teams is still starting in Cleveland.
So really, the number is not that surprising considering that the average NBA career is about 6 years. Of the 5 championship teams in the last decade 2 PG retired, 2 playing, one lost his starting role.

Who the hell says this? The last great point guards to win a title are magic and Isiah Thomas. Since then great point guards like John Stockton, Tim Hardaway, Kevin Johnson, Chris Paul, Steve Nash, etc. have not won jack. Jason Kidd won a title, but not as an elite PG, he won it as a ring chaser. Especially in today's NBA, PGs are a dime a dozen.

I would argue that Tony Parker is a pretty great PG and he has won a few titles.

Understandable, but I wouldn't rate him up with the greats. He's on the fringe. Either way, Parker wouldn't have won anything without Duncan, Ginobli, and Popovich in his corner.

To say such a thing is ignoring that the other great point guards were surrounded by talented players and coaches as well. No one wins a championship alone.

Again, I agree, but the Lakers would've struggled to win titles in the 80s without magic, and the pistons definitely don't win without isiah. The spurs could possibly still win a few titles without Parker.

Maybe a better way to look at it is if you switched out the point guards would the teams still have won. I think with Parker those teams still get the rings.

Maybe a few of the lakers teams, but I'm not sure about the pistons. Either way, the point is moot. I don't think there was ever a point in tony Parker's career where he was the best pg in the NBA. Most of the great PGs have been on good enough teams to win a ship, but haven't succeeded. Teams that build around their star PG are doomed to fail in today's nba. That's just the way it is. We could argue until we are blue in the face whether Parker is great or not, but you'd be kidding yourself if you claimed the team was build around him.

I disagree. I think there were several years where he was the best PG. It is just that he plays with the greatest PF ever (arguable) and on the Spurs who are always forgotten.

By the strict positional listing this may be true. But really both LeBron and Kobe have been point guards on their teams, doing the primary ball handling and setting up plays.

We could argue until we are blue in the face whether Parker is great or not, but you'd be kidding yourself if you claimed the team was build around him.
No, clearly the team was not built around Parker as they had Timmy there already who you would build around. But not all great players have teams built around them. I wouldn't say the Lakers were built around Magic or that the Celtics were built around Bird, both those teams had many great pieces that fit together, like the Spurs with Parker. Doesn't mean that Parker isn't great.

Making 6 All Star Teams, being named to 4 All NBA Teams and winning Finals MVP in 2007 says he's well past a fringe player.

Is he Magic or Isiah?...No.

But, Those guys are the MT. Rushmore faces at PG for the NBA. So, saying he's not elite because he falls short of them is unfair.

This is OLD news. The NBA has never ever been a point guard league.

You still win with BIGMEN and/or a slasher who can get to the rim.

Outside of a freakish (6'9') Magic and Isiah, it has been generations since big name PGs won anything.

PGs are far more valuable to college style of play.

And even at that, do the Lakers or Pistons still win as much if they still have Magic or Isaiah, but you remove 1 or 2 guys like, for example, Kareem, Worthy or Dumars, Laimbeer?

Meh, point guard is still an important position.
