You ever heard of Babe Ruth?

And the fact the Sox owner pocketed the money for Ruth instead of putting it back in the team tells you what?

In contrast, presumably the Marlins believed that Cameron Maybin, Miller, and the flotsam and jetsam they received from the Tigers made them better.

The Sox ownership's motivations don't change the fact that the Ruth for No No, Nanette trade is the biggest FO cluster fuck in MLB history, regardless of how you'd like to spin it.

If you say so. I tend to focus on the last 20-30 years but 100 years ago is good too. That's roughly the last time the Indians won the whole thing, right?

I'd certainly consider giving it to him over Cashman.

Cashman has never had to deal with:

1) A team that isn't #1 or #2 in payroll
2) A team that was coming off a losing season

Sure he's done a good job maintaining the status quo, but shouldn't that be expected?

Yeah, not Epstein though

Billy Beane could win with the Yankees

To be fair, No No Nannette was a brilliant play. It's entirely possible that ownership won the deal, while the Red Sox lost it.

But that's just bad ownership. It's part of the reason why the sox had the 86 year drought.

Beane would have a full out dynasty with the Yankees.

Indians dig. Brilliant.

You mentioned "in the history of MLB," I didn't.

Buying all the free agents took no skills. Now he has to compete with other teams willing and able to buy thus exposing his shitty scouting ability and decision making.

Yeah, no.

Notice he's going back to basics now, right? A-Rod is gone, a guy he did not want, and now it's youth and a farm. Think about it.

I think these next few years, maybe 2-3 will be interesting for Cashman.

Because once all that money from guys like Arod and CC are gone, and he buys Harper and Machado, we're back to square one.

Yeah, but thats said every winter...."The Yankees are definitely signing Scherzer"......etc.etc.

They are doing business different these days, I wouldnt assume they are signing anyone that comes with a huge pricetage....Although Ill take Machado all day long

Becuause they decided to try and get under the tax for one year to avoid the repeat offender model and "reset" their penalty.

Besides, the FA market hasn't been all that, and won't be all that this winter.

perfect time to let CC and ARod die off.

Brett gardner's contract still has value, although a small surplus.

Jacoby you're kinda stuck with unless he tears it up early on. Then maybe you can get someone like SF to take him off your hands.

Yeah, im hoping they make a move with Gardner this winter, maybe a mid rotation type starter........Im just not completely sold on Hal being like his father, in terms of outspending everyone....I think not having the highest payroll is part of his mission...YOu could be right, they may chase Harper and Machado, but Im not completely sure that will be their blueprint going forward.....You already saw with this summers' fire sale, a very un-Yankee like set of moves......HOw these young guys are developing/performing on the ML level, at the time Harper/Machado come free, may determine which way they go....If guys like Sanchez/Frazier/Matteo/Torryes show they can be a strong core for years to come, they may not dive into those $300 million deals

Personally, I think you're crazy on that. The kid's a phenomenal talent, but he had both knees surgically repaired before he turned 23. In my opinion, that's buyer beware, big time.

If I had to choose between Machado and Harper to hand a boatload of cash to, as of right now, it'd be Harper hands down.

If Harper stays healthy and has a couple of great seasons, I don't see a problem with paying him a shitton. He'll be 26 years old in the first year of his contract.

Ive heard that, but surprisingly, he had like the most consecutive games streak going in baseball at some point last season, and think he was suspended for a game

Im interested to see what Harper does this coming season, he is a mystery to me....How a guy can have a year like 2015, and come back with a year like 2016, just boggles my mind

He's had three full seasons, which is impressive, but he's also missed significant time of two or three seasons because of his knees and as I said, he's young as hell. It's just a red flag to me. Then again, I root for the Indians so I'm generally more risk averse than a Yankees fan should be. At least whichever teams might be interested will have another two years of history to see how his knees hold up.

There's also the possibility that Baltimore could trade him with an extension worked out as part of the trade in which case he'd never hit FA. I think that's probably a long shot, but it's possible.

Yeah, that's a head-scratcher for sure. On the other hand, his 2016 looks a lot worse next to his 2015 than it would otherwise.

There's plenty of teams that would love to have a 23 year old with a .243/.373/.441/.814 slash line. Granted, I'm not suggesting those are back-up-the-Brinks-trucks kind of numbers, but they're nothing to sneeze at for a player of that age.

Measured by OPS+, Harper's 2015 was the 71st best offensive season in the history of baseball. To put that into perspective, Miguel Cabrera's best offensive season (2013) ranks 96th. Harper did that at 22 years old. That's just insane.
