“For me, I just wanted to play as hard as I could, lead by example, try to lead a clean life off the ice and try to be respectful.”

that sounds about as polar opposite to Phaneuf as you can get.

Good question. Ever since I met most of the 1953 Stanley Cup winning Montreal Canadiens, when I was fourteen, the same year that I started reffing, my heart has always been with them. Do I cheer for them when I watch their games, no. I tend to watch games as a neutral observer, more so along the lines of the on ice officials. I can appreciate good plays by either team. When there are certain calls that are made by the referees, I'm able to put myself in their place and can understand why a call was or wasn't made. They have to make the call in real time, they don't have the privilege of watching the replay from 4-5 different angles and in slow motion. So, I guess that you can say that I'm still unbiased. I just want to see a good entertaining hockey game, no matter who wins.
