rewartching the game.. they ain't as bad as i wanted to say in the stands...

Obvious vanilla defensive schemes, and poor tackling/lanes from Whaley and other LBs/secondary made them look much worse.

Compton rarely didn't fall for the fake to the RB on the zone reads by Alford, our Safeties played very well I thought.

Alford (true freshman) had 15 rushes for 84 yds @ 5.6 yds per carry. His long was 17 yds. He only played about 1/3rd of the game.

There were times when NU's defense couldn't get off the field and were allowing multiple 3rd down conversions. USM picked up 15 first downs via rushing (equalling NU).

NU has had trouble containing mobile QB's and defending the run recently. It's a concern because it's not defense fer champz.

As a positive NU bent but didn't break by only giving up 13 pts.

I don't think Hundley's going to pass for that amount, although he may rush for more. I think we take away their passing game, and I think they're game planning for that too.

Franklin's a good back, and I think they're going to run him up the middle all day, with a few dump offs passing to get him outside. If our LBs can't wrap up better then we're in some trouble.

That being said, I think they'll be forced into a one dimensional offense, and that's where we win.

We will get TDs on their defense, I have no doubt.

Hundley passed the ball around to 9 different rcvrs last weekend. He's a bigger target than Alford was so hopefully not as elusive. He's a true dual threat rated #3 as a five star.

I think to make them 'one dimensional' NU will need to take away the run.

To make them one dimensional NU needs to hang 35 points on them before the 1st half is over.

Looking at the Rice game stats, I don't know what to think now. 4 of their scores took 3 plays or less. If we don't let them get away with those kinds of breakaway runs and pass plays, I think we wear them out early on. Take away the quick kills from that game and you have a pretty low yards per carry & completion.

I would still think they're planning on dump offs and slants to get their first downs (has been effective against Pelini defenses), with an occasional bomb attempt and running Franklin up the middle in-between. I see Hundley getting away from us for some first downs, but that means we can get some coverage sacks too if he indeed is not as speedy as Alford.

Whatever UCLA plans for this weekend, if they can't fix their problems from the Rice game such as the interception, fumble, and 8 penalties for 107 yards, they'll be their own worst enemy. If in fact we CAN wear them down, and I think we will, then they'll repeat their mistakes, and we'll make them pay for it (total speculation, but sounds good).
