This year was the year of the penalty for Nebraska. We had 109 penalties for 993 yards. Dating back to the 2001 season we never went over 900 yards in penalties. Only 2 other times we went for 800+ (in 08 and 09). We went over 90 penalties only twice (08 and 09). So basically under Bo we have been penalized 303 times for 2,687 yards.

I went through every single penalty this season today. Yeah, I didn't have to work and I had to work off my frustration from last night and it kept me awake from my 3 hours of sleep. I have 9 pages of penalties. Plus I am a glutton for punishment, especially when it comes to stats. This is going to get REALLY long. It may bore you to death but I have to post it after doing the work.

Penalties on offense:
19 first down penalties
17 second down
23 third down
5 fourth down

17 first quarter penalties
18 second quarter
15 third quarter
14 fourth quarter

11 personal foul penalties
12 holding
22 false starts
1 illegal block
2 Substitution infractions
2 illegal shifts
2 clipping
2 illegal formation
1 unsportsmanlike conduct
4 delay of game
2 pass interference
1 illegal forward pass

That is 64 offensive penalties out of the season long 109

15 penalties of 11 yards or more
11 penalties of 10 yards
38 penalties of 9 yards or less

Penalties on defense:
15 first down penalties
6 second down
10 third down
0 fourth down

5 first quarter penalties
12 second quarter
8 third quarter
6 fourth quarter

9 personal foul penalties
5 holding
2 offsides (both by Crick)
3 substitution infractions
12 pass interference

That is 31 defensive penalties out of the season long 109

18 penalties of 11 yards or more
5 penalties of 10 yards
8 penalties of 9 yards or less

Penalties on special teams:
3 holding penalties
1 offsides
6 personal fouls
2 illegal blocks
1 sideline interference
1 unsportsmanlike conduct

That is 14 penalties out of the season long 109

5 penalties of 11 yards or more
5 penalties of 10 yards
4 penalties of 9 yards or less

Some totals:

26 OL holding or false start penalties
26 personal foul penalties
5 substitution infractions

Yeah Bo has played a ton of games (39) to get all those penalties in just 3 short years but the average per game is so much higher than any other year as well.

Yeah I am a loser!!!!

Here is the way I see it.........the personal fouls are a reflection of Bo. There is no doubt in my mind that the way he comes off as a badass just rubs off on the players and we get a lot of personal fouls called on us (most are fair calls, some are bad).

The offensive penalties I am not putting on Bo himself.........I'm putting them on Watson and mostly on Barney. However, if Bo can't make a change with this offensive staff, then the fault becomes his.

We have one of the most undisciplind teams I have ever seen in my entire life. The personal fouls don't surprise me........we can get away with a few of those here and there and still win. But the offensive penalties we cannot get away with.........especially when our offense sputters the way it does already. Add in those stupid ass false starts, delay of games, holdings.........and it's just a recipe for disaster.

Bottom line, penalties are killing us........turnovers are killing us. Look at the games we've lost as a whole.........turnovers and penalties kinda STAND OUT in those games

Fumbles are just as bad.

We had 45 fumbles this year. Since the 2001 season, the most we have had was 31 (in 08).

Without doing the research, I think the 1999 team had even more fumbles, {49} but our offense was 500,000,000,000,000 times better than this year.

That is correct.

We had 45 fumbles and lost 16 of them this year. In 1999 we had 49 fumbles and lost 25.

This year we averaged 7.78 penalties per game. Dating back to 1962, we went over the 7 penalties per game mark ONE time. That was in 2005 with 7.4 per game.

This year we averaged 70.9 penalty yards per game. Dating back to 1962, we only averaged over 60 yards per game 4 times. 2 of those times were 2009 (63.9) & 2008 (61.5). The other 2 were 1980 (60.2) and 1970 (62.5).

In 3 years Bo has almost as many penalties (303) as games Osborne coached in 25 years (307).

Wow Jed, the statistic analysis you've done here is even more evidence that it's time to get rid of Watson! Also, Washington was playing with an injury depleted defense and our offensive line still couldn't block them consistently. Amazing!

By the way, nice job of research here.

Honestly I don't look at these numbers and an indictment of Watson. This is me transitioning my thoughts towards Bo. I said that my feelings towards Watson will be shifting towards Bo. I don't hate Bo and I am not saying I want him gone. These abundance of penalties is a direct reflection on the discipline of the team and that falls on one man and that is the head coach.

I know, but I've said quite a few times recently that the buck stops with Pelini and the decisions he makes, including the replacement of assistant coaches who aren't living up to our standards of excellence at Nebraska.

I think it's time for Tom Osborne to do a little micromanaging

After next season if Nebraska has a losing season with Watson and ole Barn screwing up the offense, Osborne will have to step in then.
