I do realize you never know what's gonna happen with players in the NHL. Still I just get the feeling 2 years without a gold isn't going to be accepted by the hockey brass in Canada. I think a lot of it will depend on which players make their NHL teams next season, but it wouldn't shock me to see a couple of the underage players in the NHL next season get waivers to play for the World Junior team.
Hockey Canada cannot control the whims of NHL GMs. Duchene could have played last year. He could have played this year. This year it was obvious that he was a dominant NHL player. Last year he wasn't and may have benefited from playing in the WJHC, but the AVs weren't about to risk an injury in a junior tournament.
More than any country this is what Canada has to deal with.
I'd like to see the next CBA say that all junior age players from all countries are released to play in the WJHC, but I don't see it happening.
