Speaking of media hacks...Dowbiggin can't write an article these days without taking a shot at Don Cherry. All because Don called little Brucie a coward on national tv over 25 years ago.

Market Forces: There has been criticism of how the NHL has marketed this Final. (Although how do you pimp a style of play that makes the Siege of Sebastopol look artistic?) As opposed to the star turns in the NBA playoffs now under way, NHL stars are largely coached out of the game in playoffs (with the complicity of the NHL Hockey Operations department). Scoring has been minimal with just 10 goals total.

Not that one affects the other, but the NBA - with many of its top stars and teams still in play - is putting up record ratings for its Round 3. While just three of the top 30 NHL scorers is in the Final, the NBA playoffs are still replete with its top stars from LeBron James and Dwyane Wade to Kevin Durant and Tim Duncan. TV likes stars, ergo TV likes what the NBA delivers.

Another nagging point is that the NHL’s marketing machine is still grinding out Bobby Orr nostalgia in the final round to hype the Stanley Cup. Look, Orr’s the best ever, but how about trying to make stars of guys who are playing this year, not last century? Build new stars instead of coasting on the old ones. That’s Don Cherry’s MO.

Star power hasn?t been enough to ignite NHL TV ratings in the U.S. - The Globe and Mail

He's not at risk of getting fired for any of the boneheaded moves he's made, but he's at risk of getting fired for marital problems?

Priorities = straight

cherry shot aside ... he's dead wrong imo about the bold ... theyre trying to get the new faces out there ... problem is no one is watching because even though the Kings have been an NHL franchise for a long time ... they arent a heritage brand ... kind of a vicious circle ... no one is taking notice of the stars on display in the final because so many want an old "vintage" team in there

the tv ratings have been horrid ...
Probably not good for the #NHL when a rerun of David Puddy’s show Rules of Engagement gets more viewers than David Puddy’s #Devils.

Well, I'm sure it would have been much better for ratings if the Rangers would have beaten the Devils, but I sure don't miss aw shucks Ronnie fawning over Brad Richards like a little schoolgirl.

I think the Kings are the worst enemy in the ratings game, not the Devils, but for all the right reasons.

The way the Kings marched through the Western Conference, people pretty much saw it as a foregone conclusion that the Cup would be theirs. Without the intrigue needed for a good final, fewer casual fans are going to tune in.

This drama alone is why Burke needs to go. A GM should not be the focal point of a hockey team.

when they have been as bad as they have. sometimes the GM being the focal point is a good thing. except um when its about 4 straight years of him being the main focal point :/

I think it's more than that. I'll be honest these two teams bore me. I know I can tune in at the beginning of the 3rd period & the game will probably be 1-0 or scoreless. So for me there really isn't any reason to watch the whole game, but that's just me. Sorry, but there really isn't any intrigue to this series for me. I expect the Kings to win. I expect each game to be low scoring. So far that's what's happening.

the hyperbolic blowhard is at it again

Brian Burke: “If you can get a goaltender who makes you better, and it costs you 15 first-round picks, would you do it? No"

Burkie drives a hard bargain ... I guess Gillis should just meet him halfway and agree to trade Luongo to the Leafs for 8 first round picks :noidea:

He wouldn't do it because he can't identify what a "goalie who makes you better" looks like.
