I remember (this is a few years back, circa 2009) him saying the following:

A lot of teams have started doing that... they give upp the puck on purpose by dumping it into a corner. Then they try to chase it down!! It's a strategy!!

Welcome to post-original 6 hockey Bob. When I tune into an NHL game I expect something somewhat enlightening from an analyst. He offers nothing of the sort.

In fairness, Bob Errey wasn't much of a dump & chaser, I could see why the concept would be new to him.

I don't buy it. The owner of the team has a say. Billy Jaffe had a deal done with Dolan to stay on as the Isles color commentator. Wang stepped in & said he didn't want Jaffe to be the color anylyst anymore. The reason Wang felt this way was because he didn't like the fact that Jaffe tells it like it is. Now we have Butch Goring as our color anylyst. Butchie has had more than his share of tongue twisting moments. We call them Butchisms. Of course I'm still amazed Howie Rose is the play by play guy. A couple of years ago Howie said "Is it Baseball Season yet?" He had no idea they were still on the air. He even said Oh we're still on the air? LOL!! It was priceless. I mean you can't make this stuff up. Only the Islanders.

Anyway wouldn't doubt the Penguins have some say but they are not employees of the Penguins and of Root Sport so they get the final say. I bet Mario knows how bad they are and the publicity they get in hockey circles for it (just like this conversation). I can guarantee they like that better than bland boring announcers that no one would ever remember.

Time for a history lesson. FSN Pittsburgh (prior to Root Sports buying them) were the ones who did not renew Mike Lange's contract when it expired in 2006, not Root Sports. Prior to that, he had done both the radio and TV broadcasts (simulcast) for over 30 years, never missing a game. It was all about Fox Sports Pittsburgh being cheap. ("new direction" they said)

This is why I listen to the radio feed and mute the TV. Even though the sound and video are never in sync, it's better than the alternative. I couldn't go without the energy, excitement and love of the game that Mike exudes.

I had to watch Bob Cole do the game on CBC, but game 4 was awesome. Probably the best 6-5 Cup Finals game I've ever seen. Look at the list of players who scored for the Penguins in that game: Lemieux, Jagr, Francis, Tocchet, Stevens and Murphy. And some of the saves Hasek made in relief of Balfour, especially on Mario were unbelievable. I think Roenick had two goals for the Blackhawks in that one as well. Awesome game all around.

And Errey had no points in this game either.
