Who is the next great steals guy?

I haven't liked anyone since Artest.

Chris Paul had a few good years in the late 2000s. I haven't liked him much after that, even though he has 6 steals titles.

Oladipo is usually not healthy, so that mars things.

What's weird is that with the pace of the game being faster the past few years, we still don't have people doing 2.5+, like they used to do.

If I sort by season, descending, Chris Paul's 2.77 in 2008-2009 was the last impressive one.

Look at how bad the averages were in the last decade.

Gerald Wallace and Brevin Knight were also pretty good. But that was a long time ago. And both of those guys get injured too much.

I want someone durable, so I can follow them year by year.

This doesn't just have to be about guards.

Malone and Olajuwon were great stealing big men.

Antetokounmpo hasn't done it for me yet. He had 2 seasons with 1.6 and 1.5, then dropped off. Only 1.0 this year.

It's not just about averages, but the way they do it too.

@MHSL82, this may be random. But for Malone's belated birthday, and to try and quench my desire for some steals, can you name a year or two that you felt Malone was good at steals?

I will then try to watch a playoffs game from that year.

Yes, that will be a lot of random luck to see if the playoffs game I watch ends up being a good steal game, or something where I feel the steal is memorable.

But I have to start somewhere.

Plus, you gave a great recommendation for the 1988 Lakers series, so your credibility in picking things is strong.

It would be great if I could see Malone with some good deflections or steals, like I saw Stockton do in that aforementioned series.

I have such an underwhelming outlook on Kirilenko. His All-Star year showed so much promise as a rebound, assists, steals, blocks guy.

He could have been the next great steals guy that I followed. But he became inconsistent.

I wanted him to be that year in, year out guy.

That was more of a Stockton steal than a Malone steal. If Stockton hadn't deflected it, Malone wouldn't have tracked it down.

It was also partially a bad pass, as opposed to a "lost ball" turnover steal.

Maybe it was a team steal.

Nope. I only have YouTube and I already did that. I don’t really want to search for something I know has happened many times but is not necessarily archived. I will say the most famous Malone steal was Jordan’s.

Same goes for steal %, only on 1.4% of possessions. At his best, he stole it on 2.8% of possessions.

He is assisting and rebounding pretty well per minute, so see! He is playing harder.

He is at .497 FG%. He needs to shoot +.500.

This is one of his worse turnover rates. So see, he moving his hand muscles more per 36 minutes, causing more errant passes! If he kept his hands straight, the passes would be better.

His FT% is below median for his career. So see, his moving hand muscles are more erratic per 36 minutes, making him miss more free throws.

I disagree regarding steals because he’s not trying to get the steals. He’s preserving his body. So he’s not lifting 60 pounds. Instead he’s lifting 15. That may cost his team if they lose regular season games, but the real question would be what happens when he needs to win like in the playoffs. Would he overextend himself? Regarding the assists, he’s being more efficient and I think the overall pace of the offense is slower and so making the same smart efficient decisions isn’t working harder. Work smarter, not harder. Sacrifice is aggression on steals.

Have you looked at bad pass rates versus other turnovers? I’m trying to see if his efficiency is worse. I know he doesn’t have as many assists, but last year may have be an outlier despite his high average overall in his career.

As for free throws, maybe he better when there’s a crowd?
