The Season So Far-Week 0
1st 4: Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma
2nd 4: Ohio State, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame
3rd 4: Texas, Florida, Oregon, Washington
Analysis: Florida is given a break because it was zero week. Otherwise performance was poor, but will be forgotten if they improve. Clemson and Alabama are way out in front, with Georgia not that far behind. After that, it’s a big drop. Too many teams trying out new QB’s. I would have little faith in these ratings until the teams actually play.
Playoff picks. Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma.
Analysis: Clemson and Alabama have easy schedules in the regular season and I would be surprised if either lost. Georgia has a tougher schedule, but has a great team. Oklahoma always seems to lose one game that they shouldn’t have lost, but should still make the playoffs.
Most surprising: Nebraska and Utah could be the most surprising. Also watch out for Minnesota and Missouri. Texas AM has a great team with the toughest schedule in the country. If they could win 2 of their 4 tough games, they have a chance to be in the mix.
Most disappointing: Texas, Florida, Miami, and Penn St.
Analysis: Texas has running game problems and won a lot of close games last year. Florida and Miami both looked like HS teams on Saturday and both must improve quickly in order to compete in their conferences. Unless Penn State comes up with a QB, they can fail easily in a very tough Big 10 Conference.
Heisman Trophy: Trevor Lawrence, Tua Tagovailoa, Jonathan Taylor, Sam Ehlinger
Analysis: Lawrence and Tagovailoa are clear favorites. I would have included Rondale Moore, but Purdue not likely to win enough games. Travis Etienne was also a worthy choice, but 2 guys from the same team never works.
Big 3 Games of the Week: Auburn-Oregon, Oklahoma-Houston, Clemson-Georgia Tech.
Not a lot of great games for week 1, which is probably good for the better teams as they can work out their problems on the field. Auburn and Oregon is the most competitive, and I like Oregon with a better QB, while Auburn is starting a true Freshman. Oklahoma will have some problems, but should still win out at the end. Clemson looks like a sure winner with a surprisingly small point spread.
Big Games in September: Texas AM-Clemson, LSU-Texas, Stanford-UCF, Oregon-Stanford, Michigan-Wisconsin, Notre Dame-Georgia, Ohio St-Nebraska,.
Analysis: LSU-Texas and Notre Dame-Georgia, look like the 2 biggest games in September. All 4 are ranked in the top ten, and the winners will move into solid position to challenge for a playoff spot. I like both Georgia and LSU in those games, but could change my mind based on the earlier games the teams play. If UCF is going to go undefeated again, this will be one of their tougher tests. Michigan and Wisconsin will establish which one is for real.
