Well in that same regard, USC lost to Bama and their biggest claim to hold their ranking was a win over UW and beating a PSU team that wasn't considered world beaters themselves. ND was a joke last season so that win, albeit a blow out, wasn't a real test either.
Both teams played more consistently than any other team in the conference last year and both looked intimidating at times, even if they also had head scratching games.
UW having the same level of schedule as last year means they aren't under the same 'prove it' doesn't it? I mean they have already proven they can carry a mediocre/sub standard schedule into November and take the north. By definition they are the team with the target on their back from that division. That is coming from a different area than all but USC in the conference right now.
I wasn't speaking about playoff or national championship level expectations, but specifically winning your division and challenging for the conference title.
I don't want to see UCLA beat USC because I think it's an easier path or UW. I want to see UCLA beat USC because I freaking can't stand that school. Period. Stop. That's it. I was pulling for Penn State in the RB.
Whoever wins the south will present problems for UW should they be in the CCG. A team that can derail USC has to be dangerous. While UW is the favorite for the north, I haven't exactly already crowned them. It doesn't take many problems along the way to derail a run for the conference. Ask USC about last year. Finished in the top 10 nationally and yet couldn't play in the CCG because of a couple of early season missteps. It's not impossible for that to happen to us this year. Stanford is very capable of giving them a run for their money and I still expect WSU to randomly win the north some year. The other 3 are surely capable of upsetting a quality team at the very least.
If I had to place a wager now I'd put UW and USC in the CCG, but would not be surprised in the least to have either or both missing from it. That's what makes college football so great. The unexpected happens quite often.
Stanford will again be breaking in some potentially dangerous pieces in some key roles. Catching them early before they reach their stride might not work against you nearly as much as you think.Stanford can Fk up both USC and the Huskys season. At least you guys get them later. I think that's a plus for you who have more depth. Your strength is DBs and their passing game is suspect so you guys can attack the run with abandon.

If you ask me which team is likely to grow more from the start of the season to that point I might pick Stanford over UW outside of that secondary you referenced. UW simply won't be breaking in as many starters and key role players.

Don't bet the farm on that one (see what I did there).Stanford is going to be a cake walk this year whether it's the beginning or end of the year.

Stanford has solid players on both lines which always make them a threat and their single biggest questionmark is replacing the productivity at RB after CM left. They have a lot of talent returning from a defense that came together after the losses to UW and WSU and held firm. They are replacing a pass rusher and I think one from the secondary, but they did lose a lot of depth and may be thin at some key positions so they better stay healthy.
They were not very good in the passing game last year and that's why people will write them off, but that may be a bit premature.
I like our chances right now on paper, but anyone not taking them seriously as a dangerous and real contender in the conference this year is not paying attention to what Shaw does down there.
Isaac Taylor-Stuart, St Augustine, Cornerback <--- he's supposed to announce tomorrow. He's a USC lean but UW has an outside chance.
Nobody in the PAC is going to out recruit SC. USC has so much talent in SoCal to choose from that its insane. Washington will be happy if they can finally finish in the top 20.I think we find out this recruiting class . USC is no longer under sanctions. No longer has an ego driven offense only coach. From what i'm reading USC is set to get a top 5 class.
