I just don't see the fascination with Drew Robinson. Nobody is going to take him and put him on a big league roster next year.

I doubt they bring in two pitchers unless one is on a minor league contract. They are not going to pay for 6 decent to great starting pitchers including Darvish who JD expects to only miss about 5-6 weeks. They may bring in 2 or 3 on a minor league deal along with either Colby or someone similar in production to Colby.

I would love to see them bring in another set up type guy to strengthen the pen. He mentioned they wouldn't be going after any closers, but didn't mention not going after the next level down.

I just found it interesting he name dropped him. But I do think they lose Gallardo and replace him with another and resign Colby. They can afford not to and Cheech needs to develop a strike out pitch.

Mitch will be traded. A pitcher is the likely pick up via Mitch

I don't mind a short term fix for the 5th spot. That doesn't mean they have to get some washed up has been though. I would understand them not wanting to commit to a long term contract for a guy to fill the 5th spot in the rotation.

until Yu Darvish is back and healthy the Rangers need more than just a 5th starter they need a stud right hand starter to slot into the rotation between Hamels and Holland and then Perez and then a 5th starter who is right handed. then when Darvish is ready you drop the 5th starter and slot Darvis between Holland and Perez

If they sign Park, Mitch is gone and could fetch a very solid SP in a trade.

No, you don't sign a stud right hander because you're missing Darvish for 5-6 weeks. That's just short sighted.

Hamels
Colby
Holland
Perez
5th starter....

You say they can't afford not to, but I can't recall them ever doing so. I think Chi Chi is more than good enough to fill out the bottom spot in the rotation for 5-6 weeks unless some guy they bring in on a minor league deal does well enough to keep Chi Chi in Round Rock.

Chi Chi has to find that out pitch first

He had a 3.74 ERA through his first 7 starts last year. He can make it through a few weeks in a big league rotation. In his last 12 innings he pitched this year he gave up 3 earned runs so he didn't exactly struggle to finish the season. If Darvish wasn't coming back until July then that might be a different thing altogether. Besides, a lot of the time a pitcher his age will be better in his second season than he was in his first one.

There is always the possibility that Nick Martinez beats him out in ST though.

The bottom line is with our budget we are not going to bring in someone who we have to cast aside when Yu comes back unless it is someone who is a swing man and can go to a long relief role. Usually those types aren't very good at starting themselves. We have had our share of those over the past few years and I think we would be better off with one of the younger guys.

There is a popular mantra going that Chi Chi doesn't have an out pitch and some of you are paying more attention to that than to what he actually did. He may not be ready to be a year long starter, but he is certainly good enough to pitch a few weeks to begin the season.

Plus he has time between now and next season to continue to develop his curveball, which he didn't have heading into last year's st. He's pretty much been learning on the fly.

Exactly. He probably will not be on the same level to start ST that he was on to end the season. Most likely he will improve and very possibly more than just a little.

Mantra or not, point is Cheechis a good talent that would be served best by working on they out pitch at AAA until it is MLB ready. In a worse case scenario of course he is able to pass as a temporary #5 but that is not what is best for his long term development. If they are not paying Gallardo then that cash can be allocated to another pitcher

If all stay healthy the Rangers should have 3 very good starters to open the season in Holland,Hamels and Perez. Just about anyone brought in would have to compete with Colby as the 4th or 5th starter. Probably the 5th. That is until early to mid May and then they get cast into the long relief role for almost 80% of the season.

They may be hoping to allocate that cash to Park. Also, people keep forgetting about Nick Martinez as well.

His long term development can be taken care of after early to mid May if it needs any more attention after this offseason. If he can't improve in the offseason then I am not sure he is going to improve next season at AAA either.

Even if he doesn't improve they simply aren't going to pay good money for a pitcher for 5-6 weeks of use. They just don't pay that kind of money for temporary insurance. It is also wise to remember that every penny they spend on extra pitching would mean less money to fortify the rest of the team. That is probably why they never do that.

Yes, a lot do forget about him. His ERA improved from 4.55 to 3.96 from 2014 to 2015. Last year at this time I remember trying to tell someone that Nick would probably be better in 2015 than he was in 2014 and that was impossible for them to fathom.

I still think he could improve even more, but he also needs an out pitch. I'm just thinking between he and Chi chi we should be able to cobble together enough starting pitching to get us into and even through the month of May, if needed.

I can't recall which Toronto pitcher it was, but one of them learned a pitch from Dyson when they were teammates. I wonder if he can work with any of our young pitchers to help them out as well.

Isn't the knock against Nick Martinez that the third time through, the opposing lineup figures him out?

How many 5th starters isn't that the case for? Also, a good out pitch could change that.
