I'm excited to see how this season plays out for us. Hextall is putting his foot down and demanding that these guys come to camp in shape. That's the way it should always be regardless. I believe the Flyers will show a lot of improvement early on as a result. So far I really like what Hextall is doing to this club. He has a mission and he is taking his experience from the Kings and bringing it here.

I'm glad Hextall is taking the initiative here and recognizes that we had a bad start last year and we were in a hole early. Same thing happened the year prior when we missed the playoffs so something had to be done.

In the final installment of Chasing the Kings, we examine each Metro team and how their rosters stack up in five key characteristics that make the Los Angeles Kings great: franchise center, strong top four anchored by legit No. 1 defenseman, playoff tested-goalie, skilled fourth line and players contributing on their entry-level deals.

Philadelphia Flyers

Franchise center: Check. Claude Giroux was third in Hart Trophy voting last season, finishing the year with 86 points. He was especially good down the stretch for the Flyers as they battled for a playoff spot and position. With Sean Couturier and Brayden Schenn, the Flyers are strong down the middle and only getting better as they develop their games.

Strong top four, anchored by legit No. 1 defenseman: The Flyers have been trying to land that franchise defenseman since Chris Pronger’s career ended, most famously in their attempt to land Shea Weber via offer sheet. They’re still looking, which is one of the reasons they shouldn’t be considered among the Eastern Conference’s most serious contenders. Kimmo Timonen came back on the cheap, which was a nice break for new GM Ron Hextall, but his status is uncertain because of blood clots. Braydon Coburn is another legit top four defenseman, but there are concerns about Luke Schenn, Nicklas Grossmann and Andrew MacDonald, especially when it comes to driving possession. In close games, the Flyers were in the bottom third of the league in Corsi For percentage in large part because of the blue line.

Playoff-tested goalie: Steve Mason was good for the Flyers when he was on the ice during the playoffs last spring, finishing with a .939 save percentage and 1.97 goals-against average in five games. He still has only nine playoff games to his credit after years of playing on some bad Blue Jackets teams.

Skilled fourth line: A fourth line that features Zac Rinaldo doesn’t qualify. It would take a pretty big identity shift for the Flyers to go with a fourth line composed completely of speed and skill. Having a GM who spent time with the Kings might help that evolution.

Entry-level contributors: The Flyers are pushing the extreme of the salary cap in part because of Pronger’s salary, which will go on LTIR. Another major reason is that nearly every player on the roster is getting paid a premium. Outside of Timonen, there isn’t a contract on the roster you’d say is an exceptional value. Robert Hagg, Scott Laughton and Samuel Morin may eventually provide minutes on the cheap, but right now, this is an issue for Philadelphia.

Its either they were over rated or I mushed them. Either way they weren't making it to the playoffs without a starting QB so if you have any hopes this season it's better to lose early than lose late.
