8-2 in last 10 series vs 50-Win+ Teams

*82-game equivalent based on 66-game season

In 10 postseasons he's squared off against 15 50-Win teams. That doesn't sound extremely low to me.

The stat was shown during last nights game and didn't include this season, since it isn't over yet. So, it wasn't a "vague stat that makes no sense."

However, it is a misleading stat that doesn't take into account that Lebron's team can only beat the teams in the playoffs that get there. He has no control over how many wins it takes those teams to get there.

I was referring to the OP's title of the thread and inital post. It was absolutely very vague and made no sense.
I've since found what he was referring to. A link or explanation from the OP would've been nice.

It is 7 series wins

And it is correct. Although, the 66 game season of 2011-2012 skewed it a bit.

Either way thread is still stupid. Thread would make sense if LBJ actually had a shitty series record vs teams with 50+ wins. It is not his fault the east is a shit conference and usually there is only 1 or 2 other teams with 50+ wins excluding LBJ team

True. The only reason I knew where it came from is because I remembered them talking about it.

Yeah, I'm as up for a good Lebron bashing as anyone, but I like to at least make it about stuff that is within his control.

Actually, James is 49-42 against 50+ win teams in the playoffs in his career and 9-7 in terms of series.

I have no doubt that the stats will show that Jordan had tougher paths to the Finals year in and year out.... but I'd be much more interested in seeing average season
wins per opponent or something like that that tells the whole picture.

So... I decided to figure this out. Here are the results.

14bku88.jpg

As expected... the numbers do show a more difficult path for Jordan, in general... but not nearly as big of a difference as the arbitrary 50-win team stat would lead you to believe.

Well however you want to dice and slice the data to not make it so bad for Lebron, Jordan just shows why his GOAT. LBJ 2 out 5....Jordan 6 out 6.

Its not about "making it not so bad for LeBron". Its about looking at numbers that actually tell the whole story rather than picking arbitrary lines of demarcation in the stats and thinking you can glean a reasonable conclusion from them.

I had no idea what the results would be before I looked them up. I was just interested in seeing what the actual win % of each opponents were.

Jordan never won a championship, let alone got a team to the championship, with a team as bad as this Cav team is now without Love and getting nothing from gimpy Irving. In fact this might be the worst team that I can think of to make the finals. They literally right now have Lebron and then nothing other than replacement level players around him at this point.

If Lebron can will this team to a title this year, we are going to have to for the first time seriously consider (it's been done a million times but before this it has always been premature) whether or not Lebron is better than Jordan.

That said: I think the Warriors roll the Cav's. This year will be about Curry cementing himself as the best overall shooter in NBA history rather than Lebron entering the conversation for GOAT.

Jordan path to the finals wasn't as easy also and Jordan never jump team to team looking for championships.

This is not the worst team to reach the final (76ers, Nets, 07 Cavs were worst) and this is actually a good squad surrounding Lebron even without Love. They play well when Lebron is on the bench, they play well when Lebron struggling against Butler and they have greatly improve defensively since Love injury. They have been shooting great from the 3 even facing the 3rd best defense against the 3. Tristan has been by far the best rebounder in the playoffs, Shumpert is an top tier perimeter defender, Kyrie played most of the Bulls series and will healthy for the finals.

kobe had most of those under shaq tho

I know you're just posting this to get responses but Kobe gets an asterisk because he played with Shaq but LeBron doesn't for playing in a historically weak conference and winning absolutely nothing before he decided to start changing teams just to get help from other superstars? Interesting logic there.

I agree with you 100%. I felt that the Love injury made the Cavs a way better team because of Tristan.

So we're all in agreement that the OP should be banished and shamed (or tarred and feathered) for submitting this thread?

FTR... if you look at these stats for all the recent greats... LeBron, Jordan, Magic, Kobe, Duncan.... Kobe by far had the most difficult paths to the finals in his appearances.

Kobe had to go through those dynasty Spurs teams quite often as well as the Kings and Trailblazers in the early 2000's. I never thought about it, but you're right, Kobe probably had the most difficult road to all of his titles. The exception being his Finals' opponents that he beat (outside of the 2010 Celtics) were somewhat weak. But hey, you play who you play.

I have a lot of respect for the success those early 2000 Lakers team had. They went to war with some of the best teams to get to the finals. How many of teams that the Lakers eliminated year after year are now on the list of best teams to have never won a championship?

With that shortened season in 2012, he would of most likely faced 3 50 win teams. Pacers, C's and Thunder.
