But really, if rednecks aren't offended by that name, redskins shouldn't be either.

Then could one argue they want the Cowboys name changed as well? I mean Cowboys killed numerous amount of indians and other people during their time. And they represent the white race, it could be seen as offensive.

But isn't WSH like the 2nd most profitable nfl team? I find it would be difficult to make the change.

1) Cowboys is not a racial slur

2) Cowboys represent the "white" race?? Are you this regarded?

And while we're at it.. since "faggot" isn't always a slur against gays, can we rename San Francisco 49ers to San Francisco Faggots?

It's probably the only Native American based team name that could ACTUALLY be offensive.

They should just go the Washington Foreskins. It's an old one but a good one.

I never really looked into it until now though, in the past, and as a fan of the team, I leaned towards their changing their name. Found this article that suggests the name originally derived from European settlers noticing the war paint Algonquin Indians used on their face.. not the skin tone itself.

Given that, if we really want to be PC, all the Redskins would have to do is tweak their logo so that face paint is actually represented on the logo. That doesn't seem like such a stretch.

I saw some people ESPN saying the logo itself was racist and needed to go to. WTF? How the hell is it racist to have a picture of a Native American? If we're going to be that fucking PC (PC meaning being a giant pussy), then I demand Notre Dame change their mascot. It's derogatory to the Irish people. "Fighting Irish" is a hurtful stereotype and dressing people up as a leprechaun is insulting to Irish culture. Also, NE can no longer be the Patriots. It's demeaning to the men who sacrificed their lives for the birth of this country to have men play dress up and shoot fake rifles when NE scores a TD. It trivializes true patriotism.

Trademark Board Hears Challenge To 'Redskins' Team Name : The Two-Way : NPR

A group of Native Americans says the NFL's Washington Redskins should not be allowed to trademark the team name, which they say is offensive. The Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, part of the U.S. Patent Office, heard the case Thursday.

The five plaintiffs must now prove that "the name 'Washington Redskins' was disparaging to a significant population of American Indians back when the team was granted the trademarks from 1967 to 1990," according to an AP report on ESPN's site.
