To turn it around they need to...

1) Update...

Fuck I don't know. It's been so long since I've been in one.

I'll have to go check out the one here before they close it too.
I always found it sad seeing guys proudly flirting with the waitresses and not recognizing the girls were "dancing for tips".

It was harness racing, not thoroughbred
I lived in South Portland except for the military until I was 35.

Scarborough Downs was a Thoroughbred track where all of the teachers worked summers.

When they couldn't run the claimers, they switched to harness or sulkies as we called them.

Search Labs | AI Overview

Scarborough Downs, a racetrack in Scarborough, Maine, has a long and interesting history, marked by its role in both thoroughbred and harness racing, as well as its eventual transformation into a mixed-use development
.
Here's a summary of its key historical points:
  • Early Days:
    • Constructed in 1949 and completed in 1950, it was initially a thoroughbred-only track, the only one of its kind in Maine.
    • It was built in a remarkably short time of 73 days on former marshland.
    • The track opened on July 1, 1950, featuring a grandstand, stables, and parking, designed to accommodate a large crowd.
    • It quickly introduced night racing, becoming the first track in the nation to do so, aiming to attract tourists.
  • Introduction of Harness Racing:
    • Harness racing was added in the 1960s, and for a period, the track hosted both types of racing.
    • In 1969, the Ogden Corp. bought the track and introduced harness racing officially.
    • In 1972, the track became exclusively a harness racing venue.
  • Highlights and Challenges:
    • The track had its peak popularity in the 1970s and 80s, attracting large crowds.
    • It hosted notable invitational races like the President's Pace and the Legislator Trot.
    • Scarborough Downs was known as the fastest half-mile track in New England for many years.
    • Despite its success, the track faced financial challenges over the years.
    • Tragic barn fires occurred in 1980 and 1982, resulting in the loss of horses.
  • Later Years and Transformation:
    • In the 2000s, simulcast wagering was introduced.
    • The track struggled with declining attendance and betting, especially after losing its lights for night racing.
    • Attempts to introduce casino gambling to boost revenue were unsuccessful.
    • The property was sold to developers in 2018, signaling the end of live racing.
  • End of an Era and New Beginning:
    • Scarborough Downs held its final live races on November 28, 2020, ending a 70-year tradition.
    • The property is being transformed into a large-scale mixed-use development called "The Downs," which will feature residential, retail, and commercial spaces.
    • Despite the closure of the racetrack, simulcast wagering continued for a period, and there were plans for an off-track betting facility.
The history of Scarborough Downs is a reminder of the changes in the horse racing industry and how beloved local landmarks can evolve over time to meet the changing needs of the community.

It's been around as long as I can remember. I suggest the Whole Bellies but they aren't for everybody. And the onion rings are great
Only way to go!

I'll do Woodman's in Essex Mass for the clams while waiting for my wife, then we'll stop at Goldenrod's on our way from Boston to Vermont!

Across the street is Bob's Clam Hut huge tourist trap b/c Guy Fierri liked the place, great clams but IMO over priced. But if it's one of those once in a lifetime deals fuck it go for it

Yes, on Google Earth you can zoom in on almost anything. But you can toggle different layers on as well and one of the layers is "places" which puts a little bubble over certain places of interest. Museums, some but not all restaurants, golf courses...

It may be something that the establishment pays Google for???

Fuck yes, I'll be stopping there!!
I'm dead serious....................The Ice Cream there is the best I've ever had. If you're an ice cream junkie try their Almond Joy.

Warning, warning, warning.......................

Their small is a large anywhere else. A triple cone has to be eaten in air conditioning or you cannot eat it fast enough to keep it from dripping all over you. A large is nearly a full quart of ice cream.

The only seafood I can eat are fried clams. Don't get strips, like Rb says, go full belly or get something else.

I lived on the west side of Manchester for 25 years and never hesitated to drive to the other side to get a large Goldenrod's. The night before we moved, the wife made me drive over as a departing farewell and a last cone.
