They had multiple hits so not sure if they fall under the category of under appreciated or recoginized

An artist I would put in that category is Todd Rundgren. He writes, can play multiple instruments and produces. Still, outside of the few recognizable songs throughout his career, most don't know who the fuck he is.

I want to bang on de drum all day. Good pick.

I would throw in Bruce Springsteen, though well known, folks have no idea how many songs the man wrote and bands he helped get a start.

These guys were pretty big back home in Europe, but they never could quite make a sustained impact over here in the States.

Thin Lizzy's "Cowboy Song" is an absolute classic rocker.

Yeah he was big in the hair band era but a very underappreciated guitar player was Nuno Bettencourt.

Example what he did for extreme in one song pre-Nuno probably the worst solo ever/post-Nuno.

In recent history, I'd say Soundgarden. Just when they were finally starting to get their due in 1996-1997ish, they broke up. But before that, they had spend 12 years crafting incredible music and not getting near the notoriety they deserved, in my opinion. To most, they were just another "grunge" band. But they were really trailblazers for the Seattle explosion. They were the first band signed to Sub Pop Records, they were the first of the Seattle bands to get a Grammy nomination, and they were the first of those bands to sign to a major label and have a major US tour. But all you heard about was Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

Historically, I'd say Frank Zappa has to be at the top. That guy did so much for the music industry on so many levels and get so little recognition it's silly. His music was brilliant and ahead of its time. He could do everything. He also helped fight for artists' rights, pioneered recording techniques that are still used, and was as prolific as any musician that ever lived, which is a testament to his hard work.

Two bands come to mind:

The Marshall Tucker Band, every bit as good as Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers Band but do not get the recognition they deserve.

The Moody Blues, a band that was very popular in their day, probably more so than Pink Floyd at the time but you never hear about them when mentioning great bands. The first seven Moody Blues albums starting with Days of Future Passed up to Seventh Sojourn should be required listening for everyone who wants to understand that era of rock'n'roll.

Davy Graham, was part of that UK Blues scene in the 60s, I believe was big on the scene when Harrison, Clapton, Beck etc. were up and coming. He got a little too deep into the drug scene and it totally destroyed his career. If you're a fan of that folksy/bluesy 60's rock this is a must own album:
