Question: I play online on a poker app with friends in a weekly poker game. Not just overly bragging but I used to play a lot online back in the day and also in live casinos for a time. All low limit stuff but just giving previous play to show I have a lot of experience.

We play very low limits, $20 buy-in cash game(Rebuy/top up at any time) with a .10/.20 blinds. The problem is we have 11 players who are regulars in the game. Of the 11 there are maybe only 2 others I would say are good players. We’ve played 12 weeks in a row now and I’m by far the winningest player in the game. There are only 4 of the 11 who are overall in the positive and I have as much profit as the 2nd and 3rd players combined. Some players are getting a bit better but there’s still a large gap between me and them.

I feel like a ringer in the game even though it’s only with friends. It’s like forced betting in golf where everyone is a double digit handicap playing with a scratch golfer. Should I sit out a few weeks and just let everyone else play or do I just keep doing what I’m doing? I’m also not being a total asshole either just trying to rack up massive wins. My wins are all relatively moderate. Of the top 10 most profitable sessions, I have just 1 of them.

Thoughts?

I'm sure you play much like I do and play aggressive but conservative if that makes sense thus allowing to hang around but not take down a lot of huge pots because you don't overplay hands a lot. I'm sure despite your success the fact you aren't shoving all the time probably means it doesn't bother them.

If you're not cleaning them out or anything, I don't think you're being an asshole for continuing to play. You get better by playing better competition.

It's poker, why sit out? If I was one of the shittier players I would work on my game to beat you, you aren't forcing them to play and you aren't forcing them to not work on their game. As long as you aren't being a dick about it which i'm sure you're not keep playing and keep winning!

Right and the other players obviously know you are the best...some people never get better at poker but why aren't they improving? You shouldn't feel bad for simply being a better player, if they don't say anything and are fine with it...it all seems good. I would think it is harder to bluff online...in person always seem more challenging imo.

It really depends on the players, not so much the venue as to who is easier or tougher to bluff. If you're playing online with all aggressive players, running bluffs are going to be much tougher. If you're playing live and everyone is weak/tight, then your bluffs will work out more often.

Yeah, I'm actually teaching one of the weaker players right now how to play. He's lost money 10 of the 12 weeks we've played and both of those winning weeks were with single digit dollar profits. So I taught him some things to work on for the following week and all of a sudden he started racking up money. Started his initial buy in at 20 and tripled it early. Then he got scared because he was up and reverted back to his previous style of play and just started leaking money back. He eventually ended up with only a single digit profit, but it was at least a profit. I got more levels to my game, so I'm not worried about giving away some basics of play. I can out level them later on, lol.
