That one play in the SB defined him... Kind like the SB for Larry Brown defined him... Neither were worth the pub they received... Both were/are overrated...

To me you can only say that saying so much before it truly hurts. Edelman gone is a much bigger deal than people realize. To me he might be a bigger deal to that offense than Gronk at this point in their careers. Gronk has lost a step with all of his injuries adding up and just not having that quick 3rd down guy is huge for that offense that thrives on sustaining drives with quick hitting passes.
Agree JE is more important to this team. However, he's gone like Rocko said next man up. NE continues to plug and play even with all the injuries on offense. No execuses they are still formidable. The D needs help.

Butler is not going anywhere. Rowe started over him because NO WR are 6'6 and 6'4 and Butler is only 5'10. This was a match-up move all around and Pats fans should know that BB "puts the team in best pos to win games". He still played in 67% of the snaps.

I agree he has not played like he has in the past. Maybe BB thought this was also an opportunity to lite a fire under his ass. He did it to J.Sher last yr, and Sher responded by playing great down the stretch. Even MB stated he has not been playing good, but BB knows what he has in MB and this team is better with him.

This team is also better at DE (Flowers, Wise, Marsh) than they were with Nink, Long, Sher.

What number does Butler like to wear? I just want to see who we have to cut when we trade for him...

I believe not giving him a long-term contract could be a factor. Also, the front seven of the Pats has been shaky the first two games so that puts a lot more pressure on the D backfield. JJones, McCourtney and Chung have looked pretty good though. So has Gilmore at times and Rowe.

hes had a brutal camp and bad first 2 games. he was benched sunday for jonathan jones.

i think hes pouting his way out of town to be honest.

then i see this:

NFL reporter says Eagles make sense as a trade partner for Malcolm Butler

and it makes a whole lot of sense.

Not sure how that makes sense really? They just traded for Darby who will be back this season, and they just used a 3rd rounder on Rasul Douglas, not to mention Sidney Jones will back next year. They have injury issues at the moment, but do you really address that with an imminent big money contract for a (reportedly) struggling player?

I don't see the Eagles as a candidate to open up the checkbook for him though. You won't get much in return for a rental player. There are plenty of teams with DB needs that could be better fits.

The one play did define him, but if you take that one play away there's probably no SB win so he absolutely was worth the pub he got for that one play.

Overrated...yeah, I guess. He did have a good season in '16, I assume that has created some unfulfilled expectations this season.

IMO...not a big deal, he seems like a fringe player that had a good season and made a huge play in the SB...but lets not make him some 1st pick talent bust...BB didn't labor too hard on replacing him...1 or 2 games?

Eventually brady is going to get hit low and end up like theismann. Brady is old. His bones are starting to get weak.

He played close to 70% of the snaps. Not starting wasn't that big of a deal. He's substantially shorter than the NOLA wideouts. May have just been for that reason, and not for all the speculation going on.

Some truth to these posts, however, it was more than one play. It was at least one game because he saved that game more than once. He made an awesome play and batted one down at the close of the 3rd Q when they were already down 10pts that would have put Seattle on the 15.

As for elite corner, no, but you don't find that kind of drive and dedication every day in the NFL.

I assume you are talking about Mychal Kendricks. There are a few issues though

1) Unless this is a straight up trade (Butler for Kendricks), or even NE draft picks thrown in, I do not see the Eagles going along. Currently they do not have a 2nd or 3rd round pick guaranteed. They have one 1st round, three 4th round, two 5th round and one 6th round pick. One of the 4th round picks is from NE (as a result of the Rowe trade), that might turn into NE's 3rd round pick (if Rowe plays 50% of the defensive snaps).

In other words, the Eagles cannot afford to trade away even more draft picks, especially when looking at the needs this team has for the immediate future: OT and RB, OLB (and maybe C and G) on the top of their list.

2) Mychal Kendricks, although not playing a lot of snaps, is currently playing very well - even though playing a limited number of snaps. Also, he is the best depth LB we have on the outside. Losing him would definitely hurt the defense a lot.

Add to that the (potential) depth the Eagles currently have at CB (and the amount invested in it), and it simply makes little sense to add Butler. It was only one game, but as it is even with all the injuries the CB's look servicable (something not the case last season). And that is with the most probable 2018 starters out (in Jones and Darby), and Darby likely to return in about 4 weeks. Darby is not even on IR as it is. And Jones is on the NFI list (and in theory could play this season).

If the Eagles were on a serious SB run, I might see it happening, but as it is they are not (at least as projected for this season). Goal is to qualify for the play-offs; and with the current state of the division (as well as the NFC as a whole) that is a realistic goal without adding Butler.

At least 4 huge plays.

Big ones.

But he is skipping this year, sort of unfocused and admits it.

Still, he could have played himself out of town.
