RE: Richards. If a player is claimed on waivers, then the claiming team is responsible for the rest of their contract. #NHL

In other words: no way in hell is he getting claimed.

Yeah, this CBA got rid of the re-entry waivers 1/2 price sale where the claiming team would only get 1/2 of the cap hit and the Kings would get the other half still.

I don't think the trade matters. The only thing that decides who gets hit with the penalty is who benefited from it.

I think, theoretically at least, that both teams can get hit if they both got a benefit.

The trade does matter, because as I mentioned before, it happened before they put the new rule in for the CBA

What does benefiting have to do with a team getting hit with the penalty? Isn't that a subjective type of situation?

OK, I don't claim to be an expert here, but some quick math tells me that if he retires, Philly is only on the hook for $250K in cap recapture penalties over the next 5 seasons. So basically nothing.

LA on the other hand would be hit with $6.6M in penalties over the next 5. Ouch.

Yeah, I forgot to consider how long it would last too. Ouch.

The only way they get around this that I can see: move him and offer to pay some of the contract. (That's allowed now, right? I'm not misremembering?) No one is going to take on that full contract, even for free off of waivers.

@TSNBobMcKenzie Somehow, #Flyers avoided penalty when they orchestrated 2 out of the 16 deals eligible for cap recapture.

Pretty sure Cobie has it right. It'd all be on LA.

I think that the rule was made retroactive. It's the NHL. They make shit up as they go all the time.

Anyhow, there's no subjective in benefit. The benefit in this case is purely mathematical. If you pay more in actual cash than what the salary cap number is, you're receiving a cap benefit.

Kings best bet is for him to go down to the minors and find his game and then they can get him back for the playoffs(if they get there) and if he plays well, with the cap going up, they can consider keeping him

OK then. I thought they made it retroactive.

This is what happens when we don't have CapGeek to consult :gaah:

Even if they are on the hook, the contract actually started out below the cap hit for a few years, which is why they wouldn't be on the hook for very much. Only one year where there salary was above cap hit. Net that vs. the other two and that's where the $250K came from.

Kings potentially eat a lot on this deal, but if I'm a Kings fan celebrating two Cups in three seasons with Richards on board, I'm not THAT upset.

FWIW, someone I know who would have access to some in the office Leaf dysfunction mentioned that the Leafs were trying to pawn both Phaneuf and Clarkson to LA in return for Richards while eating some of the aforementioned contracts. Good to see LA wisely and politely declined.

@FelixPotvin has been talking about that a lot this afternoon. The positives and negatives to swapping Clarkson and Richards. Similar deals, but worth swapping?
