need to read the silmarillion again. but thats a book you need to be seriously psyched up to read. very dense. so many names/events to keep track of. but the genius of tolkien is nowhere more obvious.

Yea. He was able to create a lot. But I didn't find the characters in the Silmarillion to be very engaging. It was basically a codex. Some of the events are interesting, but not described in a very interesting manner in my opinion. Tolkien is a genius, and he kicked off a genre that I happen to love, but I'll stick to LOTR, and I might reread The Hobbit again someday. Maybe.

I agree on all points. It's hard to read at times, but once you have track of who is who and a general idea of the landscape, it is an incredible history full of cool stuff. It was here that I finally realized that Tolkein didn't just write a good book, but completely defined an entire mythos and subsequently set the basis for an entire genre of fiction with his silly little idea of a child's story starting with the lines "In a hole in the ground, there lived a Hobbit".

whats really interesting is that he started the whole thing as an exercise in linguistics, so he could create some languages. i'm pretty sure he was more than a bit crazy.

his essays on the merits of the genre are interesting too, and debunk the idea that fantasy is for kids.

Personally I approached reading the Silmarillion as more of a history book than a story. Which is pretty much what it is. Characters aren't fleshed out as much as in LOTR, but only because Tolkien passed before finishing his work. I can't even fathom the stories he could have given us had he 10 or 20 more years to write.

Now isn't the hobbit a prequel to Lord Of The Rings?

Far over the misty mountains cold,
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere the break of day,
To seek the pale enchanted gold.

The dwarves of yore made mighty spells,
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep,
In hollow halls beneath the fells.

For ancient kings and elvish lord
There many a gleaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught,
To hide in gems on hilt of sword.

On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung
The dragon-fire, in twisted wire
They meshed the light and moon and sun.

For over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old,
We must away ere break of day,
To claim our long-forgotten gold.

Goblets they carved there for themselves
And harps of gold; where no man delves
There lay they lay long, and many a song
Was sung unheard by man or elves.

The pines were roaring on the height,
The winds were moaning in the night.
The fire was red, it flaming spread;
Laid low like torches blazed with light.

The bells were ringing in the dale,
And men looked up with faces pale,
Then dragon's ire more fierce than fire
Laid low their towers and houses frail.

The mountains smoked beneath the moon;
The dwarves, they heard the tramp of doom.
They fled their hall to dying fall
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon.

For over misty mountains grim
To dungeons deep and caverns dim
We must away ere break of day,
To win our harps and gold from him!
