We debate/discuss/argue a lot on here about who is the GOAT and where players lie in the GOAT conversation.

This is intended to be a blind poll as much as is possible. I'm only posting the same stats and career achievements of each player. We're all hoopsheads on here, so most will likely be able to know who each player is based off of the stats. So, as much as possible, please try and vote according to the stats, not who you think the player is. Also, I intentionally did not include anyone who's career ended before 1980 since that seems to be the most commonly used dividing line between the old NBA and the modern NBA. So, no Bill Russell, Jerry West, etc.

Also, 3 of these are retired players and 3 are currently playing. All players are, were or likely will be in the GOAT conversation.

Here goes:

Player A: 19.5ppg, 7.2rpg, 11.2apg, 5 titles, 3x finals MVP, 3x NBA MVP, 12x All-Star
Player B: 30.1ppg, 6.2rpg, 5.3apg, 6 titles, 6x finals MVP, 5x NBA MVP, 14x All-Star
Player C: 24.6ppg, 11.2rpg, 3.5apg, 6 titles, 2x finals MVP, 6x NBA MVP, 19x All-Star
Player D: 27.3ppg, 7.1rpg, 6.9apg, 2 titles, 2x finals MVP, 4x NBA MVP, 11x All-Star
Player E: 25.2ppg, 5.3rpg, 4.8apg, 5 titles, 2x finals MVP, 1x NBA MVP, 17x All-Star
Player F: 19.3ppg, 10.9rpg, 3.1apg, 5 titles, 3x finals MVP, 2x NBA MVP, 15x All-Star

Jordan and Lebron are easy to figure out. Should have just put the numbers without the titles, MVPs, or AS appearances.

Thought about that, but decided to go ahead and include them.

While looking at the numbers, other than points, how do you value the other contributions? Then I thought of hockey, where a player gets a "point" for an assist. Would that change we look at these numbers if one was to assign two "points" for each assist?

If we look at it that way, then the choice is between A and D. B and C would below them, and below B and C would be E and F.

Do we give one point per rebound since a rebound means that your team gets or maintains a possession, and a team roughly scores 1 point per possession?

Should have left off the awards and added in some advanced stats like RAPM, Win Shares, etc. The awards/titles make it way too easy to tell who they are.

Kinda hard between b and c. I kinda reserve judgement on these things unless you really saw them play. There are just somethings that make a player great that is not seen on the stat sheet.

Interesting take on rebounds. It gives a common value to yet another stat. What do they look like then? If we did this, steals would be another stat we could add as a "point".

Dude, I'm way too old for that advanced stuff. Heck, I was using a flip phone until about 4 or 5 months ago.

Good point on steals. I think that steals should be worth more than a point because a steal often leads to an easy bucket. Maybe make it worth 1.3 points?? Maybe even 1.5 points??

How about blocked shots? A blocked shot will sometimes lead to a change of possession, but sometimes it doesn't. Looking beyond the stats, we also have to figure that a guy who is a good shot blocker will also cause other shots to miss even when he doesn't get the block.

Blocks, IMHO are more difficult to fit into this streamlining of metrics. As you noted, it doesn't automatically mean a change of possesion or lead to points. While important, I just don't think we can streamline that one.

I think we would need to keep steals as 1, if only for the same reason as rebounds. The only thing that is certain is a change of possesion.

That is my take on it anyway...

Is it sad that I know who each guy is? The only one I had to look up was the great Lou Alcindor because I knew the all-star selection number was ridiculous, but I didn't know he won 6 MVPs. More than I thought he won. The GOAT is Jordan and his ridiculous ppg and 6 finals mvps. You left off the Hick from French Lick. Your Laker bias is showing :)

Side note. On Kareem. The older I get and the more I learn about players before my era (mid 80s till now)... The more I respect Kareem. His numbers. His longevity. A finals MVP at age 72. Dude was the 60s and 70s Tim Duncan.
