That role was dumped on him after last year's WRs coach left to become Miami's OC. He has been a special teams coach for Alabama and New England for the past decade.

Regardless of how it came to be those WRs sucked as a group, showing little to no improvement over the course of the year. I wouldn't pin the lack of production by that group solely on him, but I gotta say that I am baffled by this hire.

It is totally unexpected, first I've heard of him even being considered as a candidate. Then again, Gettleman thinks he's a savant after his pick of Danny Dimes last year.

Well, it is the NFC least. Mediocrity can win a division. Not that I care.
Not that long ago it was a losing record NFC West.

Things change, pretty quickly.

I think Gettleman must have said "think Chip Kelley can fuck up a franchise? hold my beer"

Yeah, but NFC LEAST sounds much more funny.

That makes it even worse. The odds of position coaches successfully transitioning in head coaching success is pretty low. This looks to be the worst hiring so far

Maybe he's a football savant and he brings the Giants back to relevance, but his hiring is baffling to most people here in NE and I would venture to say everyone else around the country that follows the game.

The Bengals found out what it's like to hire a position coach.

LOL, he might be a football savant, but it takes much more to be a head coach as you know following BB all these years.

So did the 49ers. Some do find success. If they have been in the NFL long enough and have that stature and knowledge to be able to put together a good staff. But the odds are against it.

Good luck to him. He just scored a tremendous promotion and raise that insures that he and his wife will live in the lap of luxury til they die.

The Giants hire a position coach who coached the least impressive unit on the entire Patriots team this year?

C'mon New York, step your sports game up. Knicks and Nets are bad, Yankees aren't the dominant Yankees of the 90's, Jets are awful and the Giants haven't done anything since the last Eli Super Bowl. This is a city that needs at least one dominant franchise in one of the three major sports.

Well, since 2009 he's been either on the Alabama staff or the Patriots, so that can't be bad. He's a special teams guy forall that time up until last year when he got the WRs dumped on him after O'Shea joined the Dolphins last year as OC (and they were "special"). Maybe he's a strong leader candidate? I know about as much as Wiki can tell me, lol.
I think the last guy with similar credentials hired to be HC might have been John Harbaugh.

ya never know.

It's all a bit pointless making a judgement at this stage because no one knows whether it will work or not - just like it was stupid when people acted like drafting Daniel Jones was the worst decision in the history of the NFL. Reporters acting like it's some sort of calamitous event that they didn't get Rhule is just silly, the last time the hot college coach came into the NFL with full control was Chip Kelly and look how that turned out - nothing is guaranteed.
