Chiefs Get Flamed On Twitter After It’s Revealed They Have $177 In Cap Space

OK, they’re really tight up against the cap. Two weeks beyond the legal tampering period, ESPN’s Field Yates shared how much salary cap space each of the 32 NFL teams had. The Chiefs had the least amount in the league by a mile. They had — wait for it — $177 in cap space. Hey, they won the Super Bowl this past season, so it’s not like they need to undergo a roster overhaul. Still, that didn’t stop folks on Twitter from absolutely crushing them.

I would not care if the Lions had to cut their entire team and hire no new player for 4 years if I got to watch them win a SuperBowl

How are they going to sign Mahomes to an extension?
You don't need the first year hit to be outrageously high. It might be 50% of the AAV or something like that, can't remember the exact rule on it.

There are three general options however:

A) Trade Chris Jones, Trade/Cut Watkins

B) Retain/Extend Jones, Cut Watkins

C) Trade Chris Jones, Extend Watkins at a cheaper number [ This is similar in premise to what the 49ers did with Buckner/Armstead]

I think they'd have to do a heck of a lot more to come up with $35-$40 Million/yr for Mahomes.

The contract wouldn't start in 2020 necessarily. The signing bonus would likely be high though, yes.

As far as the 2020 cap number goes, it's Watkins and Chris Jones that are holding things up. Chiefs couldn't sign draft picks if the draft happened today.

well, they're just following the lead of most americans and living paycheck to paycheck with nothing in savings.

My guess is they will convert a lot of Kelce's and Fishers salary into a bonus, lowering the cap hit and sign Chris Jones to a back loaded extension. Between those things they could come up with enough to work out a contract that fits Mahommes in.
