to wipe up the Sweatt...

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks President & General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the Canucks have signed forward Bill Sweatt. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Sweatt, 21, led Colorado College in scoring in 2009-10, registering 33 points (15-18-33) in 39 games. He has recorded 109 points (46-63-109) in 143 games with Colorado College.

The 6’0” Elburn, IL native won a bronze medal with Team USA at the 2007 World Junior Championships. He was awarded Top Forward at the IIHF U-18 World Championships in 2006, collecting seven points (5-2-7) and capturing gold with Team USA.

when i read this i thought ... didnt they already sign that sweatt guy ???

thats because they did ... his older brother Lee

this brother is actually the more promising one ... well done Gillis

The Canucks did something the Toronto Maple Leafs could not.
Vancouver has signed 21-year-old prospect Bill Sweatt to a three-year entry-level contract.

The Leafs acquired Sweatt's rights in the Kris Versteeg swap and were reportedly willing to offer him the maximum allowable deal but threw their hands up in frustration when they couldn't come to terms.
Burke suggested Sweatt's agent, Scott Norton, was a problem.

"I believe a more experienced agent would have got this done," Burke told the Toronto Star.

A blur on skates, the winger fell to the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. But he decided to spend all four of his eligible years at Colorado College, earning his degree, rather than turning pro.

Before trading his rights to Toronto, the Hawks also gave up on trying to sign Sweatt when they were unable to meet his financial demands.

Sweatt nearly signed in Chicago last summer but instead chose to play out his senior season at Colorado College, leading the school in scoring while getting his degree.

The Leafs withdrew their offer for him in mid-July but Sweatt had to wait until Aug. 15 to become a free agent.

Bill's brother, Lee, won the WCHA Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year award in 2007, and signed with the Canucks in May.

Bill remains something of a project, his biggest asset being his skating. Considered one of the fastest players on blades in the 2007 draft, he remains an impressive burner. The key question — is he quick enough, and mature enough to get to the NHL?

Not right away. But, given the vacancy signs all over the Canucks bottom six there's every reason to believe he has a chance to make his NHL debut at some point this season.

His brother isn't the only player in the Canucks organization he's familiar with. At Colorado College, Bill played left wing on a line with Eric Walsky, who played 37 games with the Manitoba Moose last year.

I thought that sounded like old news. :) Gillis sure likes his educated players. I'm looking forward to seeing this kid. Nothing wrong with wheels to spare.

Dear Brian Burke:
a) it takes two to tango
b) it is VERY poor form to blame an agent after a failed negotiation
c) maybe not everyone wants to play in Toronto (for less)
