What up with Penn and Yale not playing that year? They gave up a total of 13 points (13 shutouts). They were co-National Champions that season with Penn (12-0) and Princeton (8-2).

The SEC was not tied into the Sugar Bowl that year. That didn't start until 1976.That 1971 Nebraska (13-0) team was badass, but how'd they end up playing Alabama (11-1) in the Orange Bowl that year since the SEC champ is tied in to the Sugar Bowl? That year, Oklahoma (11-1) beat Auburn (9-2) 40-22 in the Sugar Bowl. Auburn finished tied for 2nd in the SEC that season.
They were all pretty much independents back then. It was extremely primitive in those days...unlike the highly organized sophistication of today's game in which we have the perfection of the 4-team playoff. What up with Penn and Yale not playing that year?
What kind of fuckery is this, I don't know many who think '79 was Bear's best team or that 2009 was Saban's. Nor do I think '71 was anywhere close to Nebraska's best team.
Shit, looking at the list, it seems to me the only schools they got right might be 2018 Clemson and 2005 Texas, outside of that, I think most have better teams further down the list.
Begrudgingly concede ... should have had a playoff ... Congratulations Cornhuskers
They have 1984 BYU (13-0) at #146. People raised hell about them being crowned National Champions. That would've been one helluva year to have an 8-team playoff. It was kind of a fucked up year. Florida (9-1-1) finished #3, but they were on probation. BYU turned out to be the only unbeaten team that year. Their schedule was pathetic. They played one ranked team all season--#3 Pitt who ended up going 3-7-1.
(3)Pitt (3-7-1)
Baylor (5-6)
Tulsa (6-5)
Hawaii (7-4)
Colorado St (3-8)
Wyoming (6-6)
Air Force (8-4)
New Mexico (4-8)
UTEP (2-9)
San Diego St (4-7-1)
Utah (6-5-1)
Utah St (1-10)
Michigan (6-6)
Could they have gotten through this.....? I doubt it.
(1)BYU (12-0) vs (8)Oklahoma St (9-2)
(4)Nebraska (9-2) vs (5)Ohio St (9-2)
(2)Oklahoma (9-1-1) vs (7)Boston College (9-2)
(3)Washington (10-1) vs (6)South Carolina (10-1)
Look how much higher 83 Nebraska is than 83 Miami. Something's up

If you remember, Nebraska could have kicked the extra point and tied the game to win the NC. Nebraska would have been the only undefeated team that season if they'd done so. Instead they went for two because Tom Osborne felt you had to do everything you could to win a game.
That was a good Nebraska team with Turner Gill, Mike Rozier (Heisman), and Irving Fryer.
This would've been sweet:#43: 1997 Michigan (12-0) AP
#24: 1997 Nebraska (13-0) Coaches
There it is and it's pretty simple......The AP voters gifted Michigan. They turned in their votes immediately following the Rose bowl the day before Nebraska's 42-17 win over #3 Tennessee in the Orange Bowl was even played. The proof in that is that the AP poll was released just minutes after the Orange Bowl finished. They'd already been counted prior to the game. The coaches poll wasn't released for hours after the Orange Bowl. It took time to count them.
The AP felt sorry for Michigan because they hadn't won a NC in almost 50 years (1948).
I was at that game with my family. My 2nd CFB game!To be fair, Alabama did destroy Auburn 31-7 in '71.
Washington (11-1) beat Oklahoma (9-2-1) in the Orange Bowl 28-17. I'm guessing the Orange Bowl was a better pay day than the Holiday Bowl...in addition, OU was also a tougher opponent than BYU, but Washington ended up screwed anyway finishing at #2. They could've proven themselves in a playoff as could have BYU and others. It's funny how Washington finished #2, but didn't even win the Pac-10 that year. Scheduling was screwy back then. USC (9-3) beat Washington handing the Huskies their only loss of the season, but they didn't play an equal number of conference games. USC played 8 (7-1) and Washington 7 (6-1).What gets me is Washington had an opportunity to play BYU in that bowl game but declined. That's how BYU drew (6-6) Michigan and won the NC.
