4 more road games left. They will be lucky to win 1 of those games.
Yeah, the schiz·o·phre·ni·a that comes with having to recruit a bunch of one and doners and not having them long enough to deal with all that is CBB.St. Johns win.
Will be pretty stunning if this Duke team get past the sweet 16
What a game. St. John's 0-11 in the Big East beats Duke. This loss could honestly keep Duke off the 1 line come March. And it's weird because I don't think St. John's is an awful team either.
Duke can't play on the road. They will lose 2-3 more road games and will likely be a 2 seed come March....possibly a 3 IMO.
I have them at 9 losses come selection sunday
Duke's defense just isn't good enough. That's what the number one problem is. #69 in defensive efficiency on kenpom. I really don't view them as a national title contender at this point. I think they can easily get hot on offense during the ACC tournament and win that, but the NCAA tournament is a whole different ballgame.

That only means one thing.
Big East >>> ACC.
Seriously though, the Johnnies have some talent. I predicted them to be the 5th team or so in the Big East. Injuries and some tough losses and they just mailed it in.
The Duke game was their whole season and they came with everything they had.
Duke was probably looking past them a little bit too.
It's honestly pretty close IMO. 80% of the league in the RPI top 100. 60% of the league looks in great shape to make the tournament and Marquette is right there on the bubble. League might end up with two #1 seeds.
ACC has too much at the top to be challenged, but in any given year, a couple of the other leagues come close.
As for Duke, Bagley and Duval have some serious defensive deficiencies. I went back and watched the tape versus UVA and St Johns and those guys get toasted on a regular basis.
Bagley seems like he tries but is just a bad position defender and Duval seems like he's trying life half the time. Maybe it was a couple of bad games, but he is a horrid defender. He's like a sieve.
Just settled.@jeffro151 Man...what can I say. btw...I like this SU team. JB's playing 3 freshman regularly...which he hardly ever plays freshman. Add in the starting center, though a Junior, this is his first year eligable to play at SU so he's new to the zone. Battle and Howard are SU's only two players returning with any minutes. These players are going to have a lot of experience next year.
But Virginia is special. This is a very deep team and there are shooters everywhere. Man I hope they keep it up cause it should be one hell of a year and ride for you guys.
Anyways. Good game. And....Bookie hasn't settled my bet yet. Did yours?
Just settled.
I would agree with that to an extent, but they also have 4 more teams, so while it's better at the top(and this year it's probably just slightly), it's also worse at the bottom(again, just slightly this year with Pitt, Wake and Ga. Tech). It is really, really close IMO.
And yes, Duke has real problems defensively. They aren't a good man to man team, and while their zone appears to have worked better, opposing teams have little to no trouble getting to the middle of it, which is obviously much easier to break it down when you can get it there. They also are a poor FT shooting team, which I think will come back to bite them. And it makes it worse when your PG is that poor at FT's. Also, Allen appears to have disappeared the last couple games, it's really, really weird.
I didn't see the game as I was out of town on business, but I've said this before; Duke goes as Duval goes, and he sucks right now! He doesn't play team defense and resembles more Like a "matador defense"
Duval gets to going so fast on offense that he gets out of control and tries to make the spectacular play rather than the appropriate play; just pIay under control! My nickname for him is "Dammit Duval"
Grayson hasn't Looked anything Like he did against Michigan State at any point this season since; and he's not a PG but K tries to play him there instead of playing GoIdwire, who is aIso a Freshman but has shown signs and is actually a scrappy defender- drives me crazy K won't give him minutes
Bagley is steady for the most part but doesn't close out on three point shooters and doesn't tighten up on the Low block pivots which drives me crazy since he's so good on offense for the most part and rebounds with effort~
Carter is a beast and Trent has been the most consistent player on the team
BoIden has been hurt
O'ConneII is in the dog house
White needs more PT as that dude can jump out of the gym and makes things happen
It's the beginning of February so there's Lots of time to make improvements; especially as young as these kids are
They obviously have a ton of talent. Playing good defense comes down to mindset, and they don't have that right now. Everyone is athletic enough to be high level defenders, but for some reason it just hasn't translated. Youth I think obviously plays a factor into that. With that said, they were in all their losses(except NC State to an extent) so they could be sitting here 22-1 and the problems on the defensive side of the ball wouldn't be as glaring. It might be better in the long run they accrued some of these losses to see if it'll help them flip a switch.
