Best thing in that scenario is the Lakers would offer Love a max contract and even with that the team could go after a great FA this summer.

Then the season after Nash retires and we free up another $9m

I'm sorry to be the guy to always bring us down, but I don't think we should be thinking draft... Use it as a bargaining chip... See if we can get a sign and trade Pau for Asik... Go after Ariza and Rondo as described...

Rondo
Kobe
Ariza
Kelly
Asik

Championship or bust baby!!! Fuck the draft! The draft is for losers... :sadbron:

Ryan Kelly as a starter?!? You've got to be kidding me!

And I'm not sold on Rondo either, especially if he's asking for $17m a year

Gotta stretch the floor with Asik... It's about spacing and compliment... Asik and Hill wouldn't work too well IMO... Regardless of who we get, the draft ESPECIALLY at 7 is a crap shoot... Everybody seems stuck on a couple of players in this thread which is fine, but which rookie is going to lead THIS team anywhere...? Smart? Exum? Any of the bigs you guys are talking about...? Rondo lead his team to a title, and to the finals loss, and many many other wars... He's a leader and this team with Gasol and Kobe would be very similar to the Celtic teams Rondo was on...

Again I get that drafting at the top 7 is something the Lakers never do so everybody is excited, but we don't need rookies unless we're rebuilding, and from what we were told we are playing for now... That's why Kobe got signed... If the Lakers use this pick and fill this team with the same garbage we had last year, I for one am not getting my league pass renewed... Not because I'm a bandwagon fan but because that's flat out disrespect to us and Kobe, because that would be a straight out lie... I'll take my lumps as a fan, but tell me we're rebuilding and don't sign Kobe for half the salary cap just to sell tickets for 2 years...:noidea:

By the way, if you really wanted an answer on Kelly, no I wouldn't start him unless he had help... He's a decent cover and would ensure no matter who was at the 4 or 5 on the other team Asik wouldn't have to leave the paint much... He's a very smart guy and his hustle combined to make him a solid rookie... As a second year player surrounded by 3 defensive studs (Rondo, Ariza, Asik) and Kobe who is still solid defensively I don't see him being torched... And offensively which is his strength, he would be the guy they had to help off of... In this case yes I would start Ryan Kelly... If you can't get a deal revolving around Pau and Asik I would not start Kelly... Hope that clears it up a little...:suds:

You have some good points on the Asik/ Rondo suggestion wlk3. The deal short buss made with Kobe both in principle and in reality is a bit flawed. If they are going to win now, they are going to have to do what you suggest. Otherwise, they are indeed in rebuild mode and in typical short buss fashion, the win-now approach is bullshit because he didn't think it through.

To do what you suggest, the Lakers are going to have to revamp the majority if not all of the roster and I am not sure they have the financial flexibility or resources (players for other teams-assets) to pull it all off due primarily to the constraints of the Nash contract, Kobe's contract, and the cap.

What will have to occur to revamp the roster is for the Lakers to convince Nash to medically retire or find some place to send him in a package deal which is highly unlikely because noone wants what he and the lakers are offering and move Kelly and the other restricted players. They'll keep Kobe and move everyone else which I doubt will happen because teams aren'ty interested in what the Lakers have to offer.

The reality is the Lakers appear that they want it both ways because they painted themselves into a financial corner. They want to live up to the promise to Kobe to win-now yet with this draft pick they appear to want to rebuild. If they go down this equivocal path, there is going to be friction and it really will lead to another year of confusion/losing and the Lakers will be forced to rebuild eventually anyway. So, Kobe is right, they had better decide which way they want to go and stick to it and with short buss, they are already screwed.

On Rondo, it's hard to pay a guy who can't shoot and hasn't been the same guy since his injury.

Why would Pau do a sign and trade just to help the Lakers, a team who has kept his name in trade talks for years. If I were Pau I would just sign with whoever I wanted, like Memphis.

Yea Outlaw, Pau has already gone a bit Kobe-like and has stated that there has to be serious changes for him to re-sign with the Lakers. I am not sure if he was referring to the removal of Don'tknowi alone (which is already occurred), the revamping of the roster, or both.

Pau to the Rockets would put him on a team that contends... I know most here hate Gasol, but I still feel he has a skill set that makes him a great player... He has about 2-3 years left IMO... So he's not really helping the Lakers more than he's helping himself... I'm sure McHale would like a shot at twin towers... Maybe not...:noidea:

He played well with Howard when self-absorbed boy was with the Lakers so that may be a good fit for Gasol.

If the team Pau wants to go to doesn't have the cap space to sign him outright, then I bet he'd be willing to do a sign and trade. The Lakers may have dangled his name in trade talks for awhile now (actually traded him once), they also paid him a lot of money. Playing for the Lakers has been pretty good for Pau.

I'd personally love to keep Pau on the team but I just feel he'll demand a bit too much money.

Anything under $9m a year and he's a keeper.

I didn't think they played well together at all. Pau biggest issue during that season was that he couldn't play in the post as much as he liked because of Howard being camped there. Pau kept complaining because he was essentially relegated to a "stretch 4" with Howard on the floor with him.

In fact, that was when he first started having issues with D'Antoni. It was during this past season when Pau got healthy enough for D'Antoni to see what he really had with Pau that Pau finally started being the 20/10 Pau that we are all used to.

Yep, 2 rings and $19 million last season are pretty good benefits.
